A violent incident in the Ramu upazila of Cox’s Bazar has left a 65-year-old man dead after his throat was allegedly slit during a late-night altercation, prompting police action and the surrender of a suspect carrying the weapon.
The deceased, identified as Kaloo Barua, was a resident of the Purbomeringloa Borua Para area under Fatekharkul Union. His body was recovered by police in the early hours of Monday from a paved road in front of a house in the locality. Authorities confirmed that the victim had sustained fatal injuries to his neck, consistent with a sharp weapon attack.
The accused, Tambu Barua, reportedly surrendered to law enforcement shortly after the incident, handing over a knife believed to have been used in the killing. Police subsequently took him into custody for interrogation.
According to local residents and police accounts, tensions escalated during celebrations linked to the Bengali New Year on Sunday night. A verbal dispute between Kaloo Barua and Tambu Barua is said to have broken out during the festivities. The confrontation allegedly intensified, culminating in Tambu Barua attacking the victim with a knife outside the latter’s residence, causing his death at the scene.
Family members of the deceased have rejected the claim that the incident was spontaneous. Kaloo Barua’s son, Asim Barua, alleged that his father was murdered as part of a premeditated plan. He further stated that there had been no prior known enmity between the two men and called for a full and transparent investigation, as well as exemplary punishment for those responsible.
Law enforcement officials from Ramu Police Station, led by Sub-Inspector Md. Sayem, visited the scene following reports of the killing. The body was recovered and later sent to the morgue for post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death and collect forensic evidence.
Officer-in-Charge Monirul Islam Bhuiyan stated that preliminary questioning indicated the suspect had confessed to the killing. He added that initial findings suggest Tambu Barua may have been under the influence of intoxicants at the time of the incident. Legal proceedings are underway, and further investigation is in progress to establish the full circumstances surrounding the death.
