Farewell to a Musical Legend

It is hard to hold back tears when speaking about Asha Bhosle. For more than seven decades, she ruled the world of music across languages, styles, and generations. From intricate classical ragas to light film melodies, her versatility was unmatched. She was, quite simply, an empress of melody whose voice carried both technical mastery and deep emotional resonance.

For many of us, her songs were not just entertainment but a lifelong companion. I grew up listening to her voice, as did millions across South Asia and beyond. Over time, admiration quietly transformed into familiarity, and in my case, that admiration eventually turned into a personal connection. Hearing of her passing feels less like losing an icon and more like losing someone from one’s own family.

Only recently, I had spoken with her nephew, Vaidhyanath Mangeshkar. He had mentioned that her health had been deteriorating. Even then, there was a faint hope that she would recover, as she had always done—because she was someone who seemed indomitable, a figure who had overcome countless challenges throughout her life and career.

Our first real interaction goes back to 2012, during a reality television programme titled Surkshetra, staged in Dubai with contestants from Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan. I was invited as a judge alongside Abida Parveen and Asha Bhosle herself. That was the beginning of a warm and respectful association, which gradually evolved into friendship. The set was filled with music, laughter, and countless informal conversations that remain vivid in memory even today.

After the programme concluded, we stayed in touch. In 2019, she lent her voice to one of my compositions titled “Chole Jaowa Dhewgulo Aar Fire Aseni,” a moment that remains deeply special to me. We spoke occasionally over the phone and met a few times afterwards. There were many moments when I thought of calling her, but somehow time slipped away. Today, that delay feels like a regret I will always carry.

Beyond her extraordinary artistry, she was an exceptionally gracious human being. She treated everyone with warmth and respect, regardless of their status. Whenever I met her, she showed remarkable care and affection. Despite her towering stature in the world of music, she remained humble and courteous in every interaction.

In conversations, she would often address me with great respect, calling me “Runa ji,” even though I repeatedly requested her to use my name informally. She would politely refuse, insisting that I was a senior and respected artist. That humility, that unwavering politeness, reflected the depth of her character as much as her music reflected her genius.

Interestingly, she would often say that some of my vocal qualities were so distinctive that they could not simply be imitated or replicated. I, in turn, would remind her that it was her voice that had shaped our understanding of music in the first place. These exchanges were filled with mutual admiration, sincerity, and affection.

Today, as I reflect on her absence, I feel an immense void. It is as though a cherished chapter of my life has come to an unexpected end. The world has lost a rare and irreplaceable voice, and I have lost a dear friend. All that remains are memories—of conversations, laughter, and the warmth of a voice that once seemed eternal.

I will always miss her calls, especially her gentle greeting: “How are you, Runa ji?” That voice, that presence, will echo in memory forever.
