Police have recovered the floating body of a 70-year-old woman from the Dhaleshwari River in Ghior, Manikganj, two days after she went missing. The body of Rokeya Begum was recovered on the morning of Wednesday, 28 October, from a stretch of the river near Begun Narchi village in Poyla Union of the upazila.
Rokeya was the wife of the late Jinnat Ali Pradhan and lived in the same area. The circumstances surrounding her disappearance and death were not immediately clear.
According to local sources, Rokeya went to bathe in the Dhaleshwari River near her home at around noon on Monday, 26 October. She returned home after bathing, but her family members were unable to establish whether or when she subsequently went back to the river.
When they realised that she was missing, relatives began searching for her in nearby areas and other possible locations. Their efforts, however, failed to establish her whereabouts, leaving the family concerned about her safety.
Her son, Md Shahadat Hossain, subsequently lodged a general diary (GD) with Ghior Police Station regarding her disappearance. The family continued to seek information about her whereabouts until news emerged on Wednesday morning that a body had been seen floating in the river.
After receiving information from local residents, police went to the scene and recovered the body. The discovery brought an end to the search for Rokeya, although the precise circumstances of her death remained uncertain.
Family members said Rokeya had been suffering from physical and mental health problems. They also said she had been living with paralysis for a long time. However, no further details were available about her condition before she went missing or whether her health problems had any connection to the incident.
Speaking to the media, Ghior Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Muhammad Mahabbat Kabir confirmed that police had recovered the body after being alerted by local residents on Wednesday morning.
He said that, as no one had raised any complaint in connection with the incident, police were preparing to file an unnatural death case.
The recovery of Rokeya’s body has left questions about how she ended up in the river and what led to her death. The available information does not establish whether the incident was an accident or involved any other circumstances. No definitive cause of death was immediately confirmed by the police.
Further details may emerge as the authorities proceed with the necessary legal formalities. For now, the circumstances surrounding the elderly woman’s disappearance and death remain unclear.
