An elderly man was killed in a violent attack inside a mosque in Sreemangal, under Moulvibazar district, in the early hours of Sunday during the Fajr (dawn) prayers. The incident has shocked the local community and prompted a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding the killing.
The victim, identified as 80-year-old Hafiz Mia, was attacked inside the Furkania Jame Mosque located in the West Loyaerkul area of Kumilla Para. According to local accounts, Hafiz Mia regularly performed religious duties at the mosque, including calling the adhan (Islamic call to prayer) and occasionally leading congregational prayers in the absence of the appointed imam.
Witnesses and residents reported that Hafiz Mia arrived at the mosque as usual before dawn for the Fajr prayer. While he was preparing for the prayer, a 35-year-old man named Jasim Mia allegedly launched a sudden assault on him. The attacker is said to have struck the elderly man repeatedly with a pen-like object, inflicting multiple injuries. Hafiz Mia collapsed at the scene and was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.
Following the incident, local worshippers alerted the authorities. Police from Sreemangal Police Station quickly arrived at the scene and detained the suspect, Jasim Mia, from the mosque premises. Officers stated that the suspect exhibited unusual behaviour at the time of arrest. However, the motive behind the attack has not yet been established.
The body of the deceased was later sent to Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital for post-mortem examination. Medical officials confirmed that the cause of death was likely severe blood loss resulting from multiple injuries. After the autopsy, the body was handed over to the family for burial arrangements.
