Chief Coordinator of the National Citizen Party (NCP), Nasiruddin Patwary, has criticized a Facebook post by the party’s southern region chief organiser Hasnat Abdullah, calling it “inappropriate.”
Speaking at an iftar gathering hosted by the NCP at a Sylhet convention centre on Saturday, Patwary expressed concern over the content of the post and what he described as unacceptable interference from the cantonment in political affairs.
“His [Hasnat’s] statement should not have been made public on social media. We believe it lacked decorum,” Patwary said. “We are witnessing certain individuals from the cantonment interfering in political matters, and that is entirely unacceptable. Political decisions should be made by politicians, not institutions.”
Taking a hard line against Awami League (AL), Patwary reiterated his party’s stance, saying that while NCP does not support a procedural ban, it demands judicial action against those responsible for the deaths and injuries of “2,000 of our brothers and sisters.”
“There’s no room for Awami League in the next election,” he declared. “Anyone – from the cantonment or any political party – who attempts to back the Awami League’s political participation will face mass resistance. Students and the public will launch an unstoppable movement to resist such moves.”
Patwary also pushed back against recent comments by the Chief Adviser regarding AL.
“We completely disagree with the chief adviser’s remarks,” he said. “If anyone, whether it’s the chief adviser or someone else, tries to obstruct efforts to ban the Awami League, its election symbol, or its ideology, we will resist. We will not back down.”
The event was also attended by Fakhrul Islam, Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami’s Sylhet Metropolitan unit, as well as NCP central joint conveners and senior leaders.
