A violent incident in Fatullah, Narayanganj, has left four bystanders injured after armed criminals posing as members of the Detective Branch (DB) police attempted to abduct a local mobile recharge (flexiload) shop owner in a retaliatory attack.
The episode occurred at around 11:30 pm on Sunday in the Kutubpur West Rasulpur Bhangarpool area, outside the shop owned by businessman Suman Mia. According to eyewitness accounts, the confrontation escalated rapidly after the group’s cover was challenged by local residents.
Police and locals report that the incident stemmed from a dispute two days earlier involving a man identified as Shamin, also known as Jewel. He had allegedly taken mobile recharge services worth 2,000 Bangladeshi Taka from Suman’s shop but failed to pay immediately. Suman reportedly detained him briefly until the payment was settled, after which he was released. This dispute is believed to have triggered the retaliatory attack.
On Sunday night, Shamin/Jewel returned to the area accompanied by four to five associates on two motorcycles. The group allegedly introduced themselves as DB police officers and attempted to forcefully take Suman away on a motorcycle. When a local resident, Anwar Hossain, asked to see their identification, one of the attackers reportedly pointed a firearm at his chest, intensifying the situation.
As more locals gathered and attempted to intervene, the armed group tried to escape. In the process, they opened fire indiscriminately, injuring four pedestrians who were caught in the chaos. The attackers then attempted to flee the scene.
However, the local community pursued the suspects. While most of the group managed to escape, Shamin/Jewel was captured along with his motorcycle and was reportedly beaten by angry residents before being handed over to the police.
Fatullah Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mahbub Alam confirmed the incident, stating that four civilians sustained gunshot injuries and were taken for medical treatment. He also confirmed the recovery of four spent bullet casings from the scene. Authorities noted inconsistencies in the detainee’s identity, as he alternately claimed to be Shamin and Jewel during questioning. He was also treated for injuries sustained during his capture.
Police have launched an investigation to identify the remaining suspects and recover the firearms used in the attack.
