Fatal Road Crash Claims One Life in Chattogram

A tragic road traffic collision on the Chattogram–Cox’s Bazar highway has left one worker dead and four others injured after a goods-laden truck struck a locally used transport vehicle known as a nosimon in the Chandanai area of Chattogram.

According to police and hospital sources, the incident occurred at approximately 9:30 pm on Monday near the Makkah petrol pump in Chandanai. The nosimon, which was carrying five labourers at the time, was hit from behind by a speeding freight truck. The impact was severe, causing all occupants of the smaller vehicle to sustain critical injuries.

Emergency responders and local bystanders quickly transported the injured workers to the Chandanai Upazila Health Complex. On duty in the emergency department, physician Dr Shubh Deb confirmed that one of the victims, Arman Hossain Sheikh (35), was declared dead on arrival. He reportedly succumbed to his injuries before receiving formal medical treatment.

Another injured worker, identified as Ashik, was found to be in a critical condition and was subsequently referred to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. The remaining three injured individuals are receiving care at the local health facility.

Sub-Inspector Ruhul Amin of the Dohazari Highway Police Station stated that preliminary investigations indicate the truck struck the nosimon from behind while both vehicles were moving along the highway stretch. He confirmed that five individuals were injured in total, with one fatality recorded shortly after hospital admission.

The deceased, Arman Hossain Sheikh, was a resident of Nazirpur upazila in Pirojpur district. He was the son of Mokhles Sheikh. His body has been kept under official procedures pending further legal formalities.

Both the offending truck and the nosimon have been seized by highway police for investigation. Authorities have indicated that a case is being prepared to determine responsibility and whether any traffic regulations were violated.

Road safety experts frequently highlight the risks associated with mixed traffic on national highways in Bangladesh, particularly the interaction between high-speed heavy vehicles and slower, locally operated transport modes such as nosimons. Poor lighting, inadequate vehicle safety standards, and high-speed driving are often cited as contributing factors in such collisions.
