FIFA Introduces Semi-Automated Offside Technology for World Cup

FIFA has officially announced the implementation of an advanced semi-automated offside technology for the upcoming World Cup, aimed at supporting Video Assistant Referees (VARs) and accelerating the decision-making process. On-field assistant referees, or linesmen, frequently delay raising their flags for a considerable period after a player enters an offside position. This new technological integration is expected to significantly reduce these delays, allowing officials to make quicker decisions and enabling assistant referees to raise their flags almost instantaneously.

Technical Specifications and Real-Time Alerts

The upgraded system improves upon the experimental versions previously trialled during the FIFA Club World Cup and the Intercontinental Cup. In those earlier iterations, the system transmitted a signal to match officials only when a player was offside by a margin exceeding 50 centimetres. The updated version features a significantly heightened sensitivity threshold. If a player is found to be offside by more than 10 centimetres, a real-time audio alert is transmitted directly to the assistant referee.

Despite these automated alerts, the final authority on whether to raise the flag and halt play remains strictly with the on-field match officials. FIFA has incorporated several built-in safeguards within the system to mitigate errors. Should there be any suspicion of a technical malfunction, the refereeing crew retains the discretion to disregard the system and refrain from flagging.

System Capabilities and Limitations

According to a report by the BBC, the technology is subject to specific operational limitations. It cannot identify highly marginal or borderline offside instances. Furthermore, the system faces difficulties if players are lying on the pitch or if multiple individuals are clustered in close proximity.

Crucially, the technology functions strictly by tracking player positioning. It cannot evaluate subjective situations, such as whether an offside player is actively obstructing an opponent without touching the ball. Interpretative assessments of this nature must still be determined entirely by the match referee.

Feature Previous Trial Version (Club & Intercontinental Cups) Upgraded World Cup Version
Offside Threshold Exceeding 50 centimetres Exceeding 10 centimetres
Alert Mechanism Digital signal to match officials Real-time audio alert to assistant referee
Visual Rendering Standard tracking interface AI-driven 3D avatars and clear animations
In-Ball Technology Standard ball tracking Internal electronic chip tracking contact
Player Database Basic positional data profiles Complete 1,248-player 3D database

Player Safety and Injury Mitigation

FIFA anticipates that the rapid automated feedback will alleviate frustration among both players and supporters. It is also designed to lower the risk of injuries caused by play continuing unnecessarily before an offside whistle is blown.

The gravity of such delays was highlighted in May 2025, when Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi collided heavily with a goalpost and fell into a coma. The incident occurred because the assistant referee delayed raising the offside flag while play was allowed to proceed. The implementation of near-instantaneous alerts aims to prevent similar on-field accidents.

AI 3D Avatars and Player Scanning

To enhance accuracy, FIFA has confirmed that artificial intelligence will be utilised to generate highly accurate 3D avatars—or digital replicas—for every participant. For the upcoming tournament, 48 competing teams will each select a 26-member squad, amounting to a total of 1,248 players. Every individual player will undergo a mandatory digital scan.

The scanning process requires each player to enter a specialised chamber. The procedure takes exactly one second to complete and will be performed just once during the official pre-tournament photoshoots. The resulting data will allow offside decisions to be broadcast to stadium giant screens and television audiences via clear, highly precise 3D animations.

Ball Tracking and Boundary Lines

FIFA has also approved supplementary technology to verify whether the ball has crossed the boundary lines immediately prior to a goal being scored. This addresses long-standing controversies, such as the one in February when an Aston Villa goal against Brentford was disallowed amidst intense debate. In that instance, it remained impossible to determine by the naked eye whether the ball had travelled completely out of bounds.

Under the new technical framework, a 3D animation—similar to existing goal-line technology—will be generated to illustrate the exact position of the ball relative to the boundary lines. Furthermore, an electronic chip embedded inside the ball will identify precisely which player made the final contact. This feature forms part of the expanded capabilities granted to VAR officials, allowing them to verify conclusively whether a corner kick decision was accurate.
