A violent clash has erupted between the residents of two villages in the Kasba Upazila of Brahmanbaria following a dispute regarding a Hajj pilgrim’s lost luggage. The physical confrontation has resulted in injuries to at least 15 individuals from both factions. At the time of compiling this report on Saturday afternoon, the altercation was ongoing, with law enforcement personnel actively attempting to restore public order at the scene.
According to local residents and witnesses, an elderly female resident of Shahpur village travelled to Saudi Arabia earlier this year to perform the sacred Hajj pilgrimage. During her stay in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, she reportedly misplaced one of her travel bags.
On Thursday evening, the pilgrim visited the offices of the Kasba Hajj Caravan, a local pilgrimage agency located in the municipal area and managed by Mohammad Giyas Uddin, a resident of Araibari village, to inquire about her missing baggage. Representatives of the agency informed her that the responsibility for safeguarding personal luggage lies solely with the individual pilgrim, and therefore, the institution had no administrative obligations or means to intervene in the matter. This declaration triggered an immediate verbal dispute, which rapidly deteriorated into a physical altercation between the two parties on Thursday evening.
The unresolved grievance from Thursday’s encounter escalated substantially on Saturday afternoon. Seizing upon the prior dispute, large groups of residents from both Shahpur and Araibari villages mobilised and descended upon the Kasba municipal area and its surrounding sectors. Armed with locally fabricated weapons, the opposing factions engaged in widespread rioting, causing severe disruption and panic across the municipal area. As of 14:30 hours on Saturday, the clashes were actively persisting, with a confirmed casualty count of at least 15 individuals sustaining injuries.
