Five Dhaka University Students Injured in Car Collision

At least five students of the University of Dhaka were injured after a speeding private car struck them near the gate adjacent to the Faculty of Business Studies (FBS) and Mall Chattar on Tuesday morning.

The accident occurred at around 11.20 am on 13 October. The injured students are from the 2025–26 academic session of the university’s Department of Marketing. They were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for treatment.

The private car involved in the accident belongs to Dr Md Shahidul Islam, a teacher at the university’s Department of Mathematics. According to information available, his son, Sadman, was driving the vehicle at the time. University Proctor Professor Md Israfil Ratan Prang said the driver did not have a valid driving licence.

According to eyewitnesses, several students were travelling in a rickshaw while others were standing near the gate when the car approached at high speed and struck them. The impact left between five and six students injured, witnesses said.

Two of the injured students reportedly suffered cuts to their legs, resulting in bleeding, while others sustained serious injuries. They were rescued and taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital shortly after the incident.

Fahim Rahman, a student of the Department of Marketing from the 2022–23 academic session, said he rushed to the road after hearing a loud noise.

“When I arrived, I saw that the car had hit the rickshaw forcefully. The students travelling in it were thrown out, and several were injured,” he said.

The accident sparked anger among students at the scene. Eyewitnesses said some students assaulted the two people inside the car and vandalised the vehicle following the collision. Further details about any legal action arising from the incident were not immediately available.

Ahmed Imtiaz, another student of the Department of Marketing, said six students from the department’s 2025–26 academic session had been struck by the car. He claimed that several of them were in serious condition and had been taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. He also said efforts were under way to bring the alleged driver under the law.

Confirming the accident, University of Dhaka Proctor Professor Md Israfil Ratan said several students had been injured and had received initial medical attention. He added that the injured students intended to file a case with the police over the incident.

The proctor further said the person driving the car did not have a driving licence. According to him, the driver was still at the proctor’s office following the incident.

Professor Ratan said the authorities would ensure that the punishment prescribed by law was enforced in such cases.

The incident has raised concerns about road safety within the university campus, where students, teachers, staff and visitors regularly move between academic buildings and other facilities. Areas near faculty buildings and campus entrances can be particularly busy, making careful driving essential.

The exact circumstances of the collision, the latest condition of the injured students and whether a formal case has since been filed remain to be confirmed by the relevant authorities.
