Five-Year-Old Child Accidental Strangulation Death in Rangamati

A five-year-old child named Ardoshi Tanchangya died of accidental strangulation while playing at her home in the Pagli Uparpara area of Wagga Union under Kaptai Upazila in Rangamati. The tragic incident occurred at approximately 5:00 pm on Monday (3 August). The deceased was the daughter of local resident Tapan Bikash Tanchangya.

According to Sheikh Mahmudul Hasan Rubel, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kaptai Police Station, the young girl was playing indoors on a makeshift swing constructed from a traditional gamcha towel, as she customarily did. At the time of the accident, her parents were away working in the nearby hill tracts engaged in Jhum (shifting) cultivation.

While playing unsupervised, the cloth towel accidentally wrapped tightly around the child’s neck, obstructing her airway and leaving her critically unconscious. Shortly afterwards, her elder sister discovered her collapsed on the floor and immediately raised an alarm. With the help of nearby neighbours, she rushed the young girl to the Kaptai Upazila Health Complex for emergency medical intervention.

However, medical personnel were unable to revive the child. Dr Ruihla Aung Marma, the Kaptai Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer, confirmed that the girl was brought to the health complex at around 6:00 pm, but clinical examination revealed she had succumbed to asphyxiation prior to arrival.

Upon receiving news of the fatality, a team from Kaptai Police Station visited both the medical facility and the scene of the incident to inspect the premises and prepare an inquest report. Law enforcement officials confirmed that necessary legal formalities regarding the unnatural death are currently underway.
