Flood Crisis Forces Postponement of Runa Laila Tribute Gala

The escalating flood crisis in Bangladesh has prompted the postponement of a prestigious tribute event dedicated to the legendary playback singer Runa Laila. Originally scheduled for 18 July at the National Theatre Hall auditorium of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, the grand ceremony has been suspended due to the deteriorating environmental situation across several regions of the country. Both the icon herself and the state-run cultural academy confirmed the decision.

Confirming the news to the media, Runa Laila explained that the decision was made out of sensitivity towards those affected by the deluge. The Shilpakala Academy is currently monitoring the situation and will finalise a fresh date once the national crisis eases. Sabina Yasmin, the academy’s public relations officer, indicated that the organisers tentatively hope to hold the event on 25 July, provided the floodwaters recede and normal conditions resume.

Tight Scheduling Ahead of International Tour

Organisers face a tight window of opportunity to reschedule the tribute, as Runa Laila is slated to depart for an international concert tour in late July. She is scheduled to travel to Australia alongside a team of musicians on 29 July. This tour marks her return to Australian stages after nearly a decade, with high-profile performances locked in for Sydney on 1 August and Melbourne on 8 August.

Because of this rigid itinerary, the Shilpakala Academy is eager to execute the tribute gala before her departure. However, senior officials maintain that the event remains entirely contingent upon the country’s overall flood situation.

A Historic Musical Celebration Delayed

The upcoming tribute carries immense significance for the Bangladeshi music industry. Spanning a monumental career of over six decades, this event will mark Runa Laila’s very first solo musical performance at the Shilpakala Academy. Alongside receiving a formal lifetime honorarium, the legendary songstress is expected to perform a selection of her most celebrated classics.

The evening is designed to bring together prominent cultural personalities, contemporary musicians, and devoted fans for a retrospective celebration of her career, blending live performances with personal anecdotes. Expressing her thoughts on the initiative, Runa Laila remarked that such programmes are vital for passing down the legacy of Bangladesh’s rich musical heritage to younger generations.

Part of a Broader Cultural Initiative

The tribute series, sponsored by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and managed by the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, was launched last year to honour national cultural treasures. The prestigious initiative commenced in September last year with a tribute to the celebrated singer Sabina Yasmin. The veteran vocalist Syed Abdul Hadi was the most recent icon to be honoured under this programme in June. Runa Laila’s selection as the next recipient represents the continuation of this state-sponsored effort to preserve and celebrate the nation’s cultural pioneers.
