Former DGFI Director Remanded Over July 2024 Attempted Murder

A Dhaka court has granted a three-day remand for Lieutenant Colonel (dismissed) Md. Afzal Naser, a former director of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI). The order pertains to an attempted murder case filed in connection with the violence during the July-August 2024 mass uprising in Bangladesh.

Judicial Proceedings and Legal Representation

On Tuesday, May 5, 2026, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Aminul Islam Junaid issued the remand order following a formal hearing. The legal proceedings were confirmed by the Public Prosecutor, Shamsuddoha Suman.

The investigation officer of the case, Sub-Inspector (SI) KM Abdul Huq of the Kotwali Police Station, initially presented the accused before the court with a petition to show him arrested in the specific case. Subsequently, the officer submitted a prayer for a seven-day remand to facilitate a thorough investigation.

During the hearing, Public Prosecutor Shamsuddoha Suman argued in favour of the remand, citing the necessity of interrogation to uncover the extent of the suspect’s involvement. Conversely, the defence counsel, Jahidul Hasan, moved a petition seeking the cancellation of the remand and applied for bail. After hearing both sides, the magistrate rejected the bail plea and sanctioned a three-day period for police questioning.

Incident Background and Allegations

The case originates from an incident on July 16, 2024, during the peak of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. According to the case dockets, students from Jagannath University were conducting a peaceful procession in the Court House Street area under the jurisdiction of the Kotwali Police Station.

The procession was reportedly intercepted and attacked by members of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations. During the ensuing violence, a Jagannath University student, Anik Kumar Das, sustained critical gunshot wounds. Following extensive medical treatment, the victim recovered and subsequently filed a formal complaint at the Kotwali Police Station on November 21, 2024.

The remand application submitted by the police indicates that preliminary investigations suggest the involvement of the former DGFI official in the coordination or execution of the crackdown. Investigators maintain that his custodial interrogation is essential to clarify his specific role in the events of that day.
