Former MP’s Brother Arrested in Sonargaon Terrorism Case

Sanjid Hasnat, the younger brother of former Narayanganj-3 MP Abdullah Al Kayser Hasnat, has been arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of police in Sonargaon, Narayanganj.

Police arrested Sanjid, 44, during an operation at the Rain Forest Eco Resort in the Mogorapara area of Sonargaon at around 4pm on Saturday. The arrest was confirmed by Tarek Al Mehedi, additional superintendent of police (crime) in Narayanganj.

Sanjid is the son of the late Abul Hasnat and the younger brother of Abdullah Al Kayser Hasnat, a former member of parliament from the Narayanganj-3 constituency. According to police, Sanjid is also a member of the Sonargaon upazila unit of the Awami League.

Police said his name emerged during the investigation into a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act at Sonargaon Police Station. Investigators reportedly found information indicating his involvement in the case, following which the DB took steps to arrest him.

Tarek Al Mehedi said a DB team conducted the operation at the resort based on specific information. Sanjid was taken into custody from the premises and was subsequently shown as arrested in connection with the case.

However, police have not disclosed details of the allegations against Sanjid or explained what specific evidence or information investigators found regarding his alleged involvement. The nature of his suspected role in the case therefore remains unclear at this stage.

The arrest has drawn attention in Sonargaon’s local political circles, particularly because of Sanjid’s relationship with the former parliamentarian and his reported position as a member of the local Awami League unit. His arrest also comes as the police investigation into the Anti-Terrorism Act case remains ongoing.

Authorities said the investigation is continuing and that further details may emerge as investigators examine the allegations and the information collected during the probe. No final conclusion regarding Sanjid’s involvement can be drawn until the investigation and subsequent legal proceedings establish the relevant facts.

Police are expected to take further legal steps in accordance with the progress of the case. Details concerning the allegations, evidence and any subsequent proceedings will depend on the findings of the ongoing investigation.
