Two men have been remanded in custody after a woman was allegedly held against her will and gang-raped over four consecutive days in the Hili region of Hakimpur Upazila, Dinajpur. The incident unfolded after the victim visited the suspect’s residence to recover an outstanding sum of money owed to her.
According to police reports and the statement submitted by the victim’s mother, the survivor went to the residence of Mohammad Ruhul Amin, also known as Rimon, in the Palpara area of Hakimpur Municipality’s Ward No. 6 on 30 September. Upon her arrival, she was unlawfully detained inside the house until 3 October. During this period, she was subjected to repeated physical assault and rape by Ruhul Amin, alongside two accomplices identified as Shukur Ali, aged 55, and Ferdous Mia, aged 50.
In addition to the physical assault, the perpetrators allegedly filmed the act and threatened to disseminate the footage across social media platforms if she attempted to report the violence to the authorities.
The ordeal came to an end when local residents grew suspicious, discovered the situation, and moved in to detain two of the suspects at the scene. Members of the community subsequently dialled the national emergency helpline, 999, prompting a swift response from the Hakimpur Police Station. Officers arrived promptly to take the two suspects into custody and secure the immediate rescue of the victim.
Following a formal complaint lodged by the survivor’s mother, police registered a case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act for gang rape and extortion through intimidation. The arrested individuals—Mohammad Ruhul Amin and Shukur Ali—were formally produced before the court, which ordered their detention pending further judicial proceedings. Operations remain ongoing to track down and apprehend the third suspect, Ferdous Mia, who managed to evade capture.
Confirming the developments, the Officer-in-Charge of Hakimpur Police Station, Badsha Alam, stated that a formal investigation is actively under way. He reiterated the police force’s commitment to apprehending the remaining suspect and ensuring a thorough process to bring all those involved to justice.
Incident cases of this nature highlight persistent security concerns surrounding gender-based violence in rural and semi-urban communities across Bangladesh, where victims frequently encounter additional coercion involving recorded digital media. Legal experts and human rights advocates continue to stress the critical necessity of rapid police response and the rigorous enforcement of digital safety laws alongside penal codes to safeguard victims and deter future offences. Meanwhile, medical care and legal support are being extended to the survivor as investigations progress.
