Former Pakistan Captain Mohammad Yousuf Urges Babar Azam to Seek Elite Overseas Coaching

Pakistan’s star batsman Babar Azam finds himself at a critical juncture in his career following a prolonged slump in form that has raised significant concerns within the nation’s cricket fraternity. The former captain struggled dramatically during the recently concluded tri-nation One Day International (ODI) series on home soil, managing just 118 runs across five matches at an underwhelming average of 23.60 and a strike rate of 74.21. His highest score of the tournament was a modest 45, made in the opening fixture against Sri Lanka. He failed to register a single half-century throughout the series, capping off a disappointing individual campaign with a duck in the final, where he edged a wide delivery outside off-stamp to fourth slip.

While Pakistan secured the tri-series trophy—chasing down a formidable target of 326 runs with three wickets to spare thanks to a magnificent century from Fakhar Zaman and vital half-centuries from Saad Baig and Arafat Minhas—Babar’s persistent technical flaws continue to overshadow the team’s triumph.

Addressing the top-order batter’s plight, former Pakistan captain Mohammad Yousuf has offered a distinctive piece of advice. Rather than allowing Babar to participate in the domestic circuit to regain rhythm, Yousuf has strongly recommended sending him to an elite cricket academy in England or Australia for specialised technical remediation.

Taking to the social media platform X, Yousuf expressed concern over Babar’s confidence, writing that playing first-class cricket without rectifying foundational technical errors could further damage his career. He emphasised that Babar remains Pakistan’s premier batsman and urged the administration to arrange high-performance coaching overseas, noting that he had advocated the exact same intervention four years ago without success.

Despite Yousuf’s warnings, Babar has already been included in the Lahore Whites squad for the upcoming Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, commencing in Islamabad on 3 November, where his side is set to face FATA, captained by Shaheen Shah Afridi. With Pakistan scheduled to play a two-Test series against Sri Lanka starting on 9 November, the national team management faces a dilemma over whether immediate domestic competition or short-term technical reconstruction represents the optimal path for their prized batsman.
