Imam Arrested Over Threat to Leak Woman’s Private Video

A mosque imam has been arrested in Munshiganj on allegations of threatening to circulate a married woman’s private video in an attempt to intimidate her. The District Detective Branch (DB) police arrested the man during a raid on a madrasa in Sreenagar upazila on Sunday night.

The accused has been identified as Nur Alam Sheikh, 32, originally from Sadar upazila of Gopalganj district. He had served as an imam at a mosque in Tongibari upazila of Munshiganj for nearly two years. He is married and has four children.

Police also seized the mobile phone used by Nur Alam during the arrest. The Munshiganj District Police confirmed the development in a press release issued on Monday morning.

According to the police statement, Nur Alam became acquainted with the woman while working as an imam at the mosque. During that period, he regularly visited a local household to provide religious lessons to a six-year-old child. Through these visits, he developed a close relationship with the child’s mother, which reportedly turned into a romantic involvement.

Police alleged that Nur Alam secretly recorded a video relating to their relationship. The matter came to light around a month ago, prompting the mosque management committee to remove him from his position and ask him to leave the area.

However, the situation reportedly escalated after he left the area. According to the allegations, Nur Alam continued to contact and threaten the woman, warning that he would circulate her private video if she did not comply with his demands. The threats raised concerns about the potential misuse of private digital material to intimidate and harass the woman.

Following the allegations, members of the District Detective Branch launched an operation to locate him. He was eventually arrested at a madrasa in Sreenagar at around 8.30pm on Sunday. His mobile phone was confiscated as part of the investigation, and police are expected to examine it for potential digital evidence connected to the case.

Munshiganj Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Operations) Kamran Hossain said Nur Alam had admitted his involvement in the incident during initial questioning after his arrest.

He also confirmed that a case had been filed with Tongibari Police Station under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act and the Pornography Control Act. The accused will be produced before a court as part of the legal proceedings.

The case highlights concerns surrounding the misuse of private images and videos as a means of intimidation, particularly when personal relationships break down. Threats to expose intimate material can cause serious psychological distress and place victims under considerable social pressure.

Under Bangladesh’s legal framework, the unauthorised recording, distribution or threatened circulation of certain private material may constitute a criminal offence, depending on the circumstances and evidence. Such cases require careful investigation, including the preservation and examination of digital evidence.

Police have confirmed the arrest and the filing of charges. However, the allegations against Nur Alam remain subject to judicial proceedings, and the court will determine his legal responsibility based on the evidence presented.
