Renowned West Bengali singer Lagnajita Chakraborty faced a terrifying incident while performing at a cultural event in Bhawanpur, East Midnapore, on Saturday evening. According to reports, a spectator suddenly stormed the stage, attempted to physically assault her, and hurled abusive language. The singer promptly filed a complaint at the Bhawanpur Police Station following the shocking encounter.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mitun Kumar De confirmed that an investigation has been initiated and the accused is currently being traced. According to the latest reports, the main suspect has now been apprehended.
The incident occurred at South Point Public School, where Lagnajita had been invited to perform as part of a cultural programme. The event began smoothly at around 7:00 PM, and the first 45 minutes passed without any disturbances. Lagnajita performed several songs, and after the first three performances, she was formally felicitated by the organisers in recognition of her contribution to music.
According to the singer, the incident took place after her seventh song on the setlist, just before she was about to move on to the eighth. She had performed the popular song “Jago Ma” from the film Debi Chowdhurani, which was well received by the audience. Moments after the performance, Mehbub Mallik, a member of the audience, allegedly stormed the stage and attempted to attack her. Quick intervention by other spectators prevented any serious harm, and the man was immediately removed from the stage.
In a written statement, Lagnajita revealed that the assailant shouted obscenities, including a remark that went, “Enough Jago Ma, now a bit of secular ga.” She described the incident as deeply distressing and admitted that it left her mentally shaken.
Following the ordeal, Lagnajita left the venue and later filed a General Diary (GD) at the Bhawanpur Police Station the same night. Police authorities have assured that steps will be taken to ensure the safety of performers at future public events.
This incident has sparked discussions in the artistic community about the need for stricter security measures at public performances, highlighting the vulnerabilities faced by performers even in seemingly controlled environments.
