Israel’s security agencies have acknowledged that the Palestinian resistance group Hamas has returned strongly in Gaza and currently exercises control over the entire area.
According to Press TV, Israeli security reports indicate that Hamas has re-established its institutions and police forces, gaining near-total control over Gaza. The occupying forces view this as a major challenge to the implementation of US plans.
Israeli TV Channel-13 reported that the information presented to the cabinet by security agencies shows Hamas restructuring its administrative and police frameworks in the Gaza Strip. According to the report, 13 of Gaza’s 25 municipalities have resumed full operations. Hamas-controlled police forces are being redeployed and internal checkpoints are being set up.
A report on the ‘Arab 48’ website stated that Israeli military officials have warned that Hamas has regained ‘near-complete control’ over large areas of Gaza and is restoring its capabilities.
Last week, the US daily Wall Street Journal reported that since the ceasefire, Hamas has grown in popularity among Gazans. However, this is being seen as a challenge to US President Donald Trump’s plans for Gaza.
The report noted that security in Gaza is a primary reason for this change. After the ceasefire stabilized last month and Israeli forces withdrew, Hamas members were again seen on the streets, patrolling as police and internal security forces and taking action against criminals. This has reduced crime and looting, which the people of Gaza have welcomed. Gazan businessman Hajim Saru said, “We experienced a breakdown in security, with theft, riots, and lawlessness. No one can stop it except Hamas, which is why people support them.”
Hamas active in diplomatic efforts
Delegations from Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey met in Cairo on 25 November for the second phase of talks. These countries, along with the United States, are mediators in the Gaza ceasefire agreement. According to sources close to Egypt’s intelligence, the meeting was attended by intelligence chiefs of Egypt and Turkey and the Prime Minister of Qatar. The discussion focused on strengthening joint efforts to successfully implement the second phase of the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas.
