A major fire broke out in the Konabari area of Gazipur Metropolitan City early on Thursday, destroying around 12 warehouses used to store garment scraps and other materials. Firefighters battled the blaze for nearly two and a half hours before bringing it under control at about 8am.
The incident occurred in the Dewaliabari area under Konabari Metro Police Station. According to the Fire Service and local residents, the fire originated at Bachchu Mia’s polythene warehouse at around 5.30am.
The flames reportedly spread rapidly from the initial warehouse to neighbouring scrap storage facilities. With a large quantity of garment scraps and other combustible materials stored inside the warehouses, the fire quickly intensified and spread across the adjoining structures.
The rapid spread of the blaze caused panic in the surrounding area. Local residents attempted to tackle the fire at the initial stage while also contacting the Fire Service for assistance.
Three units from the Konabari Fire Service station reached the scene after receiving the emergency call and began firefighting operations. As the intensity of the blaze increased, two additional units from the Sarabo Fire Service station were sent to the area.
A total of five units were involved in the operation. Firefighters worked continuously for around two and a half hours before managing to bring the fire under control at approximately 8am.
Mohammad Saiful Islam, warehouse inspector at the Konabari Fire Service station in Gazipur Metropolitan City, said the Fire Service received information about the fire at around 5.30am and dispatched units to the scene.
He said the intensity of the fire was high and strong winds made the operation more difficult. The five units eventually succeeded in containing the blaze at around 8am.
The immediate cause of the fire remains unknown. Saiful Islam said the cause would be established after an investigation, while the actual extent of the damage would also be assessed following an inspection of the affected warehouses.
No casualties have been reported so far. However, a substantial quantity of garment scraps and other stored materials was destroyed in the fire.
The affected warehouses were situated close to one another, allowing the flames to spread quickly once the fire broke out. The presence of combustible materials and the strong wind added to the difficulty faced by firefighters as they worked to prevent the blaze from spreading further.
After the fire was brought under control, the Fire Service began assessing the condition of the affected premises. Officials said the financial losses could be determined only after the damaged warehouses and their contents had been examined in detail.
The incident has also drawn attention to the risks associated with storing large quantities of combustible materials in closely packed warehouse areas. However, no official conclusion has yet been given regarding the circumstances that led to the fire or whether any safety requirements were breached.
Authorities are expected to determine the cause of the incident and assess the full extent of the losses through the investigation. At present, the Fire Service has confirmed that the blaze has been brought under control and that no deaths or injuries have been reported.
