Germany Suffer World Cup Blow as Karl Ruptures Muscle

Germany’s World Cup preparations have been dealt a severe blow following the withdrawal of their highly-rated teenage attacking midfielder, Lennart Karl. The 18-year-old has been ruled out of the upcoming tournament after sustaining a serious muscle injury during a training session. The German Football Association (DFB) officially confirmed the development yesterday.

Injury Details and Squad Replacement

Karl suffered the injury in Chicago during a final training session held just ahead of Germany’s ultimate pre-World Cup friendly against the United States. Subsequent medical evaluations revealed a torn muscle.

In an official statement published on Instagram, the DFB stated:

“Lenni severely tore a muscle during the final training session. This injury means he has been ruled out [of the World Cup]. We wish you a speedy recovery, we are all with you.”

To fill the vacancy, Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann has called up RB Leipzig’s 20-year-old midfielder, Assan Ouédraogo. Under official tournament regulations, teams are permitted to replace a seriously injured or ill player up to 24 hours prior to the kick-off of their opening match.

Karl’s Seasonal Statistics and Performance

Widely regarded as a “gem” of contemporary German football, Karl was anticipated to be one of the breakout young talents at the tournament. This expectation followed an exceptional club campaign with Bayern Munich, where he established himself as the youngest goalscorer in the club’s UEFA Champions League history.

At the international level, Karl made his senior debut for Germany in March and has earned three caps. In last week’s friendly against Finland, he was named in the starting line-up, delivering a notable performance and providing an assist.

Nagelsmann’s Concerns and Goalkeeping Dilemma

The severity of Karl’s injury was immediately apparent to Julian Nagelsmann. Speaking at a press conference, the German manager remarked:

“Unfortunately, Lenni was injured in training today. Now we have to wait and see what happens. To be honest, the injury does not look good at all.”

Germany, who are four-time world champions, are placed in Group E and will begin their tournament campaign on 14 June against debutants Curaçao.

Aside from Karl’s absence, Nagelsmann faces additional selection concerns regarding his veteran goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer. On Friday, the manager confirmed he would take no risks with the 40-year-old in the friendly against the United States. Neuer is currently recovering from a calf injury sustained last month whilst playing for Bayern Munich.

Consequently, Neuer is set to enter the World Cup without having played a competitive international match for nearly two years. Although he retired from international football after the 2024 European Championship, the legendary goalkeeper agreed to reverse his retirement last month. In Neuer’s absence, Oliver Baumann has been Germany’s primary choice in goal, having started in last week’s fixture against Finland.
