The Bangladesh government has issued an executive order declaring a five-day holiday for the upcoming celebration of Durga Puja, the largest religious festival of the Bengali Hindu community. The decision offers public sector employees and citizens an extended break from 20 to 24 October, combining designated festival leave with an additional executive holiday and the regular weekend.
According to the holiday schedule outlined in the executive order, the festive period commences on 20 October with an executive holiday granted on the occasion of Maha Navami. This is followed by a general public holiday on 21 October for Vijaya Dashami, marking the culmination of the five-day festival when idols of Goddess Durga are immersed in water bodies across the country.
To bridge the celebration seamlessly into the weekend, the government has declared an executive holiday for 22 October. Paired with the subsequent weekly holidays on Friday, 23 October, and Saturday, 24 October, public servants and bank workers will enjoy a continuous five-day respite from work.
In addition to the mandatory public holidays, Hindu government officials and staff have been granted the provision to opt for two days of optional leave. This arrangement allows members of the community to participate fully in religious rituals, family gatherings, and traditional festivities without professional constraints.
Durga Puja signifies the victory of good over evil and brings intense cultural vibrancy across the nation, particularly in urban hubs like Dhaka and Chittagong. Over recent years, public administration officials have frequently reviewed holiday schedules during major cultural and religious celebrations to manage travel logistics, reduce traffic congestion on national highways, and allow citizens adequate time to return to their ancestral homes. The extended break is expected to trigger a significant outflow of commuters from major cities, prompting transport authorities to step up safety measures and public service operations during the holiday week.
