Grave Desecration Shocks Lalmai Community

In a deeply disturbing incident in the Lalmai upazila of Comilla, the decapitated body of a teenage boy was discovered five months after his burial, sparking widespread shock and outrage in the local community.

The victim, 13-year-old Maruf, son of Bablu Mia from Naora village under Bagmara North Union, had been laid to rest in a family graveyard following what relatives reported as suicide by poisoning approximately five months earlier. However, the sanctity of his burial was violently violated when unknown individuals exhumed his body during the night and severed his head before fleeing the scene.

The incident came to light on Sunday afternoon when a group of local youths were cutting palm fruit from a tree adjacent to the graveyard. While working near the burial site, they noticed a decomposed body lying exposed on top of a grave, notably without its head and burial shroud. Alarmed by the discovery, they informed other villagers, triggering immediate panic in the area.

As news spread, family members arrived at the scene and identified the remains as those of Maruf. They subsequently informed the police, after which officers from Lalmai Police Station conducted an on-site inspection. Following the examination and with the consent of the family, the remains—without the severed head—were reburied at the same graveyard.

Local residents expressed shock and disbelief, with many suggesting that the act may have been linked to superstition or ritual practices. Some villagers speculated that the head and burial cloth might have been taken for occult or fraudulent spiritual activities, a belief rooted in longstanding local fears of misuse of human remains for so-called black magic practices. Authorities, however, have not confirmed any motive at this stage.

Police officials stated that an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the grave violation and to identify those responsible. Law enforcement assured that appropriate legal action will be taken once the perpetrators are traced.
