Global greenhouse gas emissions reached an unprecedented peak in 2024, according to newly released data from the United Nations. The figures show a 2.3 per cent increase from 2023 levels, largely driven by rising emissions in India, China, Russia, and Indonesia.
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), in its annual Emissions Gap Report, described the rise as “significant,” noting that it mirrors the rapid growth rates last seen during the early 2000s.
The agency warned that the persistent upward trend places the world further off track from meeting the Paris Agreement targets and underscores the urgent need for stronger, more coordinated global action to reduce carbon output.
