Veteran goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa is on the verge of making football history by becoming the first Mexican player to be selected for six FIFA World Cup tournaments. The 40-year-old goalkeeper was included in the 26-man squad announced on Sunday by Mexico’s head coach, Javier Aguirre, ahead of the upcoming global tournament.
Ochoa made his first World Cup appearance during the 2006 tournament in Germany. Although his playing opportunities with the national team have decreased in recent years, Aguirre has chosen to retain the veteran shot-stopper. The coach’s selection strategy focuses on blending seasoned experience with emerging young talent.
Team captain Edson Álvarez and veteran striker Raúl Jiménez are set to provide vital experience alongside Ochoa. Concurrently, the squad features several rising stars, including Guadalajara forward Armando González and teenage midfielder Gilberto Mora. At just 17 years old, Mora is on track to become the youngest player ever to represent Mexico at a FIFA World Cup. The squad also includes young talents Obed Vargas and Brian Gutiérrez, both of whom grew up in the United States and hold dual citizenship.
Further diversifying the squad, Aguirre has selected Spain-born midfielder Álvaro Fidalgo and Colombia-born forward Julián Quiñones. Both players acquired Mexican citizenship and have since become regular fixtures in the national team setup.
Mexico previously hosted the World Cup in 1986, a tournament in which they successfully reached the quarter-finals. This year, they are co-hosting the tournament alongside the United States and Canada, with the competition scheduled to run from 11 June to 19 July.
This tournament marks the third time Javier Aguirre will lead Mexico as head coach at a World Cup, having previously managed the national team during the 2002 and 2010 editions.
As part of their final preparations, Mexico will play a warm-up friendly against Serbia on Thursday. Following this fixture, they will officially begin their World Cup campaign on 11 June against South Africa at the Estadio Azteca.
The following table outlines the complete 26-man squad selected by Javier Aguirre, categorised by playing position:
