Gunfight Breaks Out in Narayanganj as Police Raid Drug Den

A violent clash between law enforcement officers and suspected drug dealers in the Isdair Rail Line area of Fatullah, Narayanganj, left three police personnel and a suspect injured on Saturday afternoon. Police managed to apprehend two individuals at the scene, including one who sustained gunshot wounds during the encounter, and seized a loaded firearm.

The incident unfolded around 3:00 PM when a team from the Fatullah Model Police Station launched an operation following reports of an armed confrontation. According to eyewitnesses and police officials, a local narcotics gang had gathered near the Dhaka-Narayanganj railway tracks in Isdair to establish regional dominance, sparking gunfire between rival factions. Upon the arrival of the police unit, the suspects opened fire and pelted the officers with bricks and stones in a bid to breach the police perimeter.

Fatullah Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Mahbub Alam stated that officers were forced to return fire in self-defence to control the spiralling situation. Following a brief pursuit, law enforcement officers rounded up two suspects: 24-year-old Jasim, son of Razzak, and 23-year-old Mohan, son of Abdus Salam, both residents of the Isdair locality.

During the exchange, Jasim suffered gunshot injuries to his leg. Police recovered a loaded pistol from his possession before transferring him under custody to the 250-bed Narayanganj General Hospital (commonly known as the 300-bed Hospital). Dr Apu Kumar Saha, an emergency department physician at the hospital, confirmed that Jasim was admitted around 3:45 PM with two distinct entry marks on his leg consistent with bullet wounds. Medical staff ordered immediate X-rays to ascertain whether any projectiles remained lodged within the tissue.

Three police officers sustained injuries while attempting to subdue the suspects and dodging the barrage of thrown debris. Sub-Inspectors Md. Shafiq and Bandhan Chandra Sarkar, along with Constable Rashedul, received primary medical care at the same hospital facility for their injuries.

Local sources revealed that the narcotics trade and youth gang activities in Isdair are largely controlled by Razzak and his two sons, Jasim and Waseem. The family has a extensive history of armed conflict and law enforcement actions. In April, a targeted anti-narcotics drive resulted in the arrest of Razzak and his younger son, 22-year-old Md. Waseem, alongside the recovery of 53 rounds of live ammunition. Just days prior to that operation, police had also arrested Jasim near the Dhaka airport area, seizing two firearms.

All three family members were recently released on bail and immediately attempted to reassert control over local drug turf. This aggressive push triggered a territorial feud with Shakil, a rival local drug dealer. Residents reported that this ongoing dispute had already escalated into an armed confrontation between the two factions on 7 August.

Addressing the police response, Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Tareq Al Mehdi assured that every individual involved in the attack on police personnel would be identified and brought to justice, emphasizing that anti-narcotics operations across the Isdair region remain ongoing.
