Bangladesh national football team midfielder Hamza Choudhury is edging closer to departing English football as rumors mount over a prospective move to Azerbaijani Premier League side Sabah FC.
According to Azerbaijani sports outlet Offsideplus, the 26-year-old midfielder has reached an agreement on personal terms with Sabah FC, positioning him on the verge of ending his long association with Leicester City. While negotiations have progressed significantly, neither club has issued a formal announcement confirming the transfer.
Reports suggest Sabah FC have been actively pursuing the defensive midfielder for several weeks. With agreement reached on personal terms, the completion of the deal hinges on finalising routine paperwork and medical assessments. Should the remaining formalities proceed smoothly, the Bangladeshi international could feature for the Baku-based club in the upcoming season.
Choudhury spent the bulk of his professional career with Leicester City, developing through their academy before breaking into the first team. His tenure at the East Midlands club includes historic silverware victories, notably lifting the FA Cup in 2021 followed by the FA Community Shield later that year. He was also a key squad member during Leicester’s 2023–24 EFL Championship-winning campaign, which secured their swift return to the English Premier League.
In search of regular playing time, Choudhury spent recent periods on loan at Watford and, most recently, Sheffield United. Transfermarkt currently values the midfielder at approximately €4 million.
A potential move to Sabah FC offers Choudhury an avenue into European continental competition. The reigning Azerbaijani champions have enjoyed a strong start to their continental campaign, successfully clearing the first two qualifying rounds of the UEFA Champions League to reach the third qualifying stage.
