Hasnat and Sadik Face Oxford Deception Allegations

A significant controversy regarding alleged misrepresentation has surfaced involving Abu Sadik Kayem, the Vice-President of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU), and Hasnat Abdullah, the Chief Organiser of the National Citizens’ Party (NCP). The two student leaders face accusations of fabricating an official invitation from the University of Oxford after privately hiring the historic debating chamber of the Oxford Union Society for a fee.

The incident occurred during a panel discussion held on Sunday, 14 June 2026, titled “The Student-Led Uprising and the Future of Post-Revolutionary Bangladesh”. Following the session, both individuals claimed on social media that their participation was the result of an institutional invitation from the prestigious university, a claim that subsequent investigations have revealed to be a commercial venue hire arrangement.

Commercial Framework of the Oxford Union

An investigation into the Oxford Union Society’s official portal (oxford-union.org) shows that the historic premises are regularly available for public commerce under a “Private Hire” protocol. The venue explicitly permits external individuals and groups to rent its spaces, including the main Debating Chamber, without requiring any academic affiliation.

The commercial terms outlined by the venue include:

  • Open Access: Bookings are available to the general public; university enrollment or union membership is entirely unnecessary.

  • Hourly Rental Scheme: The chamber is designated as a “dry hire venue” let out by the hour, subject to a mandatory minimum booking threshold of two hours.

  • Independent Production: Rentees must provide their own event management, technical support, and staff, as the institution provides no administrative backing for private functions.

Investigation Exposes False Invitation Claims

The claims of an academic invitation were challenged by author and researcher Mohiuddin Mohammad. To demonstrate how easily the historic hall can be secured by the public, Mohammad initiated a test booking under a fictional entity named the “Mohiuddin Mohammad Fan Club UK”.

Mohammad successfully booked the exact same Debating Chamber for an upcoming slot on 13 August 2026, from 15:00 to 19:00. The commercial transaction required a fee of £2,048 (approximately 338,000 Bangladeshi Taka), resulting in an automated booking confirmation under the reference number R19721053. This demonstration proved that entry to the chamber is based on standard financial transactions rather than institutional recognition.

Despite the commercial nature of the event, both speakers published misleading content on their digital profiles. In a video broadcasted on his Facebook page, Abu Sadik Kayem stated within the first six seconds:

“I have come here at the invitation of Oxford University.”

Simultaneously, the verified Facebook page of Hasnat Abdullah circulated a video entitled “Hasnat Abdullah at the Historic Seminar Room on the Invitation of the Oxford Union”, which misled public followers regarding the nature of the event.

Institutional Backlash and Warning of Legal Redress

Following the event, Mohiuddin Mohammad contacted the Oxford Union administration with four specific inquiries. The Oxford Union and university authorities responded via email and telephone, confirming that the meeting was a purely private commercial arrangement. The institution stated unequivocally that it had no involvement in organizing the event or inviting the speakers.

The Oxford Union administration issued a strict warning, stating that an investigation would be launched into clients who falsely present private room rentals as official university endorsements. The authorities emphasized that misrepresenting commercial hires in this manner could lead to the individuals being permanently blacklisted from the venue alongside potential legal action.

Bangladeshi expatriate students at Oxford noted that authentic university events are always listed on official institutional calendars and emailed directly to the student body. No such listings were present for the 14 June event. Student groups warned that portraying paid venue rentals as official academic honors severely damages the international reputation and credibility of Bangladeshi students abroad.
