Hundreds Charged Over Coast Guard Station Assault Case

A criminal case has been registered at Mongla Police Station following an attack and act of vandalism targeting the Harbaria Station of the Bangladesh Coast Guard, located adjacent to the Sundarbans in Mongla, Bagerhat. The case, initiated by the Coast Guard, includes allegations of obstructing government officials from executing their duties and rioting. The formal complaint explicitly names 44 individuals and lists an additional 250 to 300 unidentified people as accused participants.

The legal action was initiated on Thursday night by Contingent Commander Md Shahidur Rahman Shahin of the Harbaria Station, which operates under the Coast Guard West Zone. Following the incident, law enforcement authorities arrested six individuals, including three named in the initial information report. On Friday afternoon, the detained suspects were presented before a court, which subsequently ordered them to be remanded in judicial custody.

Disputes Over Missing Fisherman Spark Local Confrontation

According to statements from local residents, the confrontation originated on Thursday morning due to rising tensions between the inhabitants of the Joymonir Thota area and Coast Guard personnel regarding a missing local fisherman. The missing individual has been identified as Miraj Sheikh, whose family has spent the past two months searching for him across various locations.

The family of Miraj Sheikh and fellow villagers allege that personnel from the Coast Guard apprehended and took Miraj away from Joymonir Thota on 10 April. In the criminal case filed by the Coast Guard regarding Thursday’s unrest, Mukta Khatun, the wife of the missing fisherman, has been designated as the primary accused individual. Furthermore, Miraj’s sister, Liza Islam, and his mother, Taslima Begum, have been listed as the second and third accused individuals respectively. All three women were apprehended by the Coast Guard on Thursday. Almost all of the 44 named defendants reside in Joymon village within Mongla Upazila.

Details of the Incident and Documented Property Damages

The formal complaint states that at approximately 10:30 am on 11 June, the accused individuals used rumours to unlawfully assemble and incite local residents. The crowd subsequently gathered near the pontoon area of the Harbaria Coast Guard Station, arriving in 15 to 20 boats. The prosecution alleges that the crowd entered the station while chanting derogatory, hostile, and provocative slogans against the government and the Coast Guard before launching an assault and committing acts of vandalism.

The attackers were reportedly armed with sharp weapons, knives, cutlasses, iron rods, fish-scaling knives, and bamboo sticks, which they used to intimidate Coast Guard personnel and obstruct them from fulfilling their official duties. During the confrontation, government property including the glass windows of the pontoon, chairs, fans, lights, and tables were destroyed.

The case documents further detail that an outboard engine, an RB-1001 boat, nine solar panels, four large batteries, several fans, a gas stove, lighting fixtures, and plastic tables sustained significant damage. The Coast Guard estimates the monetary value of the damaged state assets to be approximately 22.5 million Bangladeshi Taka. The complaint also notes that Coast Guard personnel fired 45 blank rounds during the incident to disperse the agitated crowd, defend themselves, and secure the government armoury and property.

Police Operations and Alleged Involvement of Forest Bandits

The Officer-in-Charge of Mongla Police Station, Atikur Rahman, confirmed that the Coast Guard filed the case on Thursday night following the morning’s altercations. Subsequently, a joint operation conducted by the Coast Guard and the police resulted in the arrest of six individuals. Three of these detainees are listed as named defendants in the case. The arrested individuals were processed and sent to the court on Friday.

Concurrently, the Coast Guard has indicated suspicion regarding the underlying motives behind the unrest. Speaking during an exchange of views with journalists on Friday morning, the Zonal Commander of the Coast Guard West Zone, Captain Mohammad Mesbaul Islam, stated that the authorities believe forest bandits and their local collaborators were involved in organizing the attack on the Harbaria Station.

Geographical and Institutional Context of Mongla Upazila

Mongla Upazila is a critical southwestern administrative region within the Bagerhat District of the Khulna Division in Bangladesh. It houses the Port of Mongla, which is the second largest and busiest seaport in the country. The region is highly sensitive due to its direct proximity to the Sundarbans, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the largest contiguous mangrove forest in the world, which spans across both Bangladesh and India.

The Bangladesh Coast Guard operates under the Ministry of Home Affairs and is mandated to maintain maritime security, protect territorial waters, prevent smuggling, and curb criminal activities such as piracy and illegal logging inside the mangrove channels. The Harbaria area serves as a key transit point for vessels navigating the internal river channels of the Sundarbans, making the station highly strategic for law enforcement operations. Confrontations between local fishing communities and maritime law enforcement agencies occasionally occur over fishing regulations, movement restrictions in protected sanctuary zones, and security operations against active criminal gangs operating deep within the forest tracts.
