Husband Handed Life Sentence Over Dowry Murder in Faridpur

A court in Faridpur has sentenced a man to imprisonment until death for strangling his 25-year-old wife over unpaid dowry demands. Judge Shamima Parveen of the Faridpur Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal delivered the verdict on Monday, 27 July 2026, concluding a seven-year judicial process.

The convict, Monojit Sarkar, was tried for the murder of his wife, Roma Biswas. Alongside the prison term, the court imposed a fine of 300,000 Taka, directing the District Magistrate and District Commissioner to recover the amount and hand it over to the victim’s family. Monojit absconded prior to the verdict, prompting the tribunal to issue an arrest warrant against him. Meanwhile, six of his relatives—Bipul Sarkar, Sorojit Sarkar, Liton Sarkar, Biplab Sarkar, Sabuj Sarkar, and Dipali Sarkar—were acquitted after the prosecution failed to prove their involvement.

Case documents reveal that Monojit, son of Chittaranjan Sarkar from Kalaikanda village in Modhukhali Upazila, married Roma, daughter of Ranjan Biswas from Jarjonnagar village, in early 2015. The couple shared a daughter. At the time of the wedding, Roma’s family provided 400,000 Taka in cash, three and a half bhori of gold, and furniture valued at nearly 50,000 Taka. Despite additional payments amounting to 100,000 Taka over the years to quell domestic abuse, Monojit made a fresh demand for 100,000 Taka on 5 April 2018.

When the family expressed inability to pay, Monojit strangled Roma with a nylon cord on the afternoon of 20 April 2018. He subsequently filed an unnatural death case at Modhukhali Police Station, telling her relatives that she had committed suicide due to severe abdominal pain. Subsequent post-mortem medical findings refuted his claim, confirming death by asphyxiation due to strangulation.

Following the forensic report, the victim’s father filed a murder case at Modhukhali Police Station on 10 May 2018 against Monojit and his six relatives. Sub-Inspector Mahabul Karim investigated the incident and submitted a formal charge sheet against all seven individuals on 24 October 2018.

Commenting on the ruling, Public Prosecutor Advocate Golam Robbani Bhuiyan highlighted that dowry remains a persistent social evil, reiterating that individuals committing violence under the guise of dowry demands cannot evade justice.
