A group of robbers allegedly broke into a house in Feni’s Chhagalnaiya by cutting through a window grille, attacked an Oman-based expatriate with a sharp weapon and assaulted his wife before fleeing with gold jewellery and cash.
The incident took place at around 3am on Thursday (17 September) at Bhuiyan Bhaban in Bonanipara, West Chhagalnaiya, within Chhagalnaiya municipality.
The victim, Abdur Rashid Bhuiyan, said he lives on the second floor of the building with his wife. No one else was at home when the incident occurred.
According to his account, the robbers entered the residence after cutting through the grille of a window while the couple were inside. Rashid was attacked when the intruders entered the house, leaving him injured. His wife was also physically assaulted during the incident.
The robbers then allegedly searched the house and took around three and a half bhori of gold jewellery along with an unspecified amount of cash before escaping.
After the group fled, Rashid sought medical treatment at Chhagalnaiya Upazila Health Complex in the early hours of the morning. Details of the injuries sustained by him and his wife were not immediately available.
The incident has raised concerns over the security of residential properties in the area, particularly at night. The alleged method of entry is also a key part of the police investigation, as the attackers are accused of gaining access by cutting the window grille rather than using the main entrance.
Police visited the scene after receiving information about the incident. Investigators are examining available evidence and reviewing CCTV footage from the area in an effort to identify those involved.
Mohammad Ismail, inspector (investigation) at Chhagalnaiya Police Station, said police had visited the scene and collected CCTV footage. He said the investigation was under way and that necessary legal action would be taken if a complaint was formally submitted by the victim’s family.
The police have not yet confirmed the identities of the alleged robbers, the exact amount of cash taken, or whether any of the stolen jewellery or money has been recovered. The circumstances surrounding the attack and the identities of those responsible are expected to become clearer as the investigation progresses.
