A mosque in Sitakunda upazila of Chattogram has been shaken by the discovery of the hanging body of its long-serving imam, with a handwritten note found nearby suggesting possible personal and family-related distress.
The incident took place late on Tuesday night at around 10:30pm at the Raja Mia Sowdagar Jame Mosque in the Sonichhari Union’s Banglabazar area. The deceased, identified as 43-year-old Md Amir Hossain, had served as the imam of the mosque for approximately 13 years and was widely known among local worshippers. He originally hailed from the Banshkhali upazila of Chattogram and had been residing in a room on the upper floor of the mosque complex.
According to local sources and police accounts, Mr Hossain led the Asr prayers in the afternoon as usual. However, by the time worshippers arrived for Maghrib prayers, they noticed that the mosque was locked and the imam was nowhere to be found. The situation caused initial confusion among the congregation, who assumed he might have stepped out on personal errands.
When the mosque remained closed at the time of the Isha prayers, concern grew among the worshippers. Some of them later looked through a window on the upper floor of the mosque. It was during this attempt that they reportedly saw the imam’s body hanging from a ceiling fan hook inside a room on the second floor. The authorities were immediately informed, after which police arrived at the scene and recovered the body.
Officials from the mosque management committee stated that the body was found with a green cloth tied around the neck, suspended from the fan hook. A ladder was also found lying on the floor below. In addition, a handwritten note was recovered from his room, which allegedly referred to issues related to family disputes. The contents of the note are now under verification by investigators.
Police have sent the body to the morgue for a post-mortem examination as part of standard procedure to determine the exact cause of death. Investigators are also examining the note to confirm whether it was written by the deceased and to establish the circumstances leading up to the incident.
A sub-inspector from Sitakunda Police Station said that necessary legal steps are being taken and that the matter is under active investigation. Authorities have not yet issued any definitive conclusion regarding the cause of death.
