A luminous figure in the musical landscape of Bangladesh, freedom fighter and “sound warrior” of the Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra, Sujeo Shyam was an extraordinary personality whose life blended melody, creativity, and deep patriotism. Through his musical brilliance and dedication to the nation, he became one of the most distinguished composers associated with Bangladeshi cinema and the songs of the Liberation War.
Sujeo Shyam was born on 14 March 1946 in Sylhet. His profound love for music inspired him to begin his artistic journey at an early age. Possessing an exceptional sense of melody and creative expression, he quickly established himself in the country’s musical circles.
In 1969, he began working in film music direction alongside composer Raja Hossain. The duo soon became widely recognised in the film industry as the celebrated “Raja–Shyam” partnership. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, they jointly composed music for nearly twenty-five films. Among the notable productions were Surjogrohon, Surjo Songram, and Bhool Jokhon Bhanglo. His musical direction for the film Surjogrohon earned him the prestigious BACHSA Film Award.
During the historic Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971, Sujeo Shyam joined the Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra, where he served as both a vocalist and a musical contributor. Numerous inspirational songs broadcast from the station during the war ignited courage and hope among freedom fighters and ordinary citizens alike, strengthening the spirit of the independence movement.
In 1986, he began working independently as a music director with the film Boloban, directed by Abdul Latif Bacchu. From that point onward, he composed music for many films, gradually developing a distinctive and admired musical style.
At the beginning of the twenty-first century, he received his first Bangladesh National Film Award for his music direction in the film Hason Raja, based on the life of the legendary Baul mystic Hason Raja. At the special request of filmmaker Chashi Nazrul Islam, he also lent his own voice to one of the songs in the film.
In 2006, with the aim of preserving the musical heritage of the Liberation War, he directed the album Swadhin Bangla Betarer Gaan, a compilation of 46 songs originally broadcast by Bangladesh Betar in 1971. The album played an important role in introducing these historic songs to a new generation.
He continued to contribute to war-themed cinema as well. In 2014, he received widespread appreciation for composing the music of the films Ekattorer Khudiram and Ekattorer Ma Jononi.
For his outstanding contribution to Bangladeshi music and culture, Sujeo Shyam was honoured with prestigious national recognitions, including the Ekushey Padak and the Shilpakala Padak. He was also nominated as Best Composer and Music Director at the Bangladesh National Film Award in 2021.
On the morning of 18 October 2024, this great artist departed from the world. Yet his melodies, his patriotism, and his timeless compositions will continue to resonate in the hearts of Bengalis for generations to come.
Deep respect and heartfelt tribute to this remarkable musical warrior.
