In remembrance of the untitled hero of the haor region, Jagatjyoti Das

16 November 1971. Just four days before Eid-ul-Fitr.

The haor region lost one of its most fearless sons—Jagatjyoti Das.

His killing remains a brutal example of the atrocities committed by the Razakars and Pakistani occupation forces. In a deeply inhumane act, he was hanged from an electric pole at the Azmiriganj cattle market while still half-alive, and nails were driven into his body as he was publicly tortured.

The young Jyoti, wearing only shorts and a vest, hung lifeless for a long time—without any burial or dignity.

He eventually died amid unbearable suffering. Later, his body was thrown into the waters of the Kushiara River.

He was only 22 years old—yet his courage, bravery, and leadership remain rare in history.

Many say Jagatjyoti Das was the “Jesus of Bengal”—just as Jesus was publicly crucified, Jagatjyoti was similarly tortured in public by being nailed to a post.

It is even said that photographs of this brutality were taken by the Razakars, because he was Jagatjyoti Das.

He was born on 26 April 1949 in Jalsukha village, Azmiriganj upazila of Habiganj. His father was Jitendra Chandra Das and his mother Harimati Das. In childhood, everyone simply called him “Jagat”.

Despite extreme poverty, he passed his secondary examination in 1968.

Later, he went to Assam for military training and returned home driven by the call of his homeland to join the Liberation War.

After completing training in Shillong in 1971, he formed the legendary “Das Party”.

Under his leadership, the haor region became a nightmare for the occupying forces. In areas including Dirai, Shalla, Chhatak, Azmiriganj, Baniachang, and Tahirpur, his forces made riverine movement extremely difficult for the enemy.

So effective were the operations of the Das Party that the Pakistan government was forced to announce on radio:

“The government will not take responsibility for lives and property on this route.”

Fighting battles that sound almost mythical, his group of only 13 fighters defeated a Pakistani force of 250 soldiers, and with just 10–12 members, liberated Sripur.

His final journey began on 16 November. While moving toward an operation in Bahubal with 42 comrades, he fell into an enemy ambush at Badalpur.

News of his death was broadcast on Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra and All India Radio.

Moved by his extraordinary bravery, the provisional government of Bangladesh reportedly declared him “Birshreshtha” posthumously.

However, in 1972, he was awarded the title “Bir Bikram” instead.

This raises a lingering question—why was the originally declared highest honour, “Birshreshtha”, not ultimately conferred?

Akashvani Kolkata had once reported that Bangladesh would honour him with its highest recognition. His name was also announced as “Birshreshtha” on Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra.

But later, that commitment was not fulfilled.

History sometimes corrects its own mistakes—just as it did centuries later in the case of Galileo.

Perhaps one day Bangladesh will also address this unfinished chapter.

On that day, this unsung hero may finally receive the honour he rightfully deserves.
