Among the few luminaries in the sky of world cinema who continue to shine eternally, Satyajit Ray stands as one of the brightest. He was not merely a film director—he was simultaneously a photographer, painter, composer, writer, and an extraordinary symbol of creativity. His artistic endeavours elevated Bengali culture to an unparalleled position on the global stage.
He was born on 2 May 1921 into a culturally distinguished family in Kolkata. His father, Sukumar Ray, was a celebrated writer and photographer, while his grandfather, Upendrakishore Ray Chowdhury, remains a legendary figure in Bengali children’s literature. Growing up under the affectionate care of his mother, Suprabha Ray, in a richly cultural environment, his artistic sensibilities were nurtured from an early age. Losing his father very young, he learned the lessons of life and resilience under his mother’s guidance.
After completing his education, his time at Santiniketan broadened and deepened his outlook on life and art. He later worked at an advertising agency, where he developed a refined visual language of aesthetics and design. This experience subsequently endowed his films with remarkable visual sophistication.
His fascination with cinema gradually evolved into an inevitable calling. Encounters with the French filmmaker Jean Renoir and the profound impact of Vittorio De Sica’s Bicycle Thieves deeply influenced him. Inspired by these experiences, he resolved to make a film based on Pather Panchali.
Despite immense hardship, financial constraints, and even the necessity of selling personal possessions, he never abandoned his vision. Eventually, with support from the Government of West Bengal, his debut film Pather Panchali was completed. Upon its release in 1955, it resonated not only in India but across the world as an extraordinary portrayal of simple yet profoundly realistic human life.
Thereafter, a succession of masterpieces—Aparajito, Apur Sansar, Charulata, and Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne—elevated him to the pinnacle of global cinema. Each of his works reflects the subtleties of human emotion, a mirror to society, and a deep sense of humanity.
He was equally celebrated in literature. His creations, Feluda and Professor Shonku, remain immortal characters in Bengali fiction to this day.
During his lifetime, he received numerous accolades, including India’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, and the prestigious Academy Award on the international stage. His artistic legacy continues to be widely admired and studied across the world.
On 23 April 1992, this towering figure passed away in Kolkata. Yet his creations, his vision, and his humanity remain vividly alive, continuing to inspire generations.
