India Beat Bangladesh To Reclaim Regional Football Crown

The Bangladesh women’s national football team fell short of securing a third consecutive South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Women’s Championship title after suffering a 3–1 defeat against host nation India in the final. The highly anticipated tournament climax, held on Saturday 6 June 2026, took place at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium (also known as the Fatorda Stadium) in Margao, Goa.

With this triumph, India secured their record-extending sixth SAFF Women’s Championship trophy, reclaiming the crown they last held in 2019. For Bangladesh, the defeat marked the end of their quest for a historic hat-trick of regional titles, having previously won the championship back-to-back in 2022 and 2024. The loss mirrored the outcome of the 2016 final, where Bangladesh were also defeated by the host nation, India.

Tactical Personnel Changes and Early Missed Openings

Bangladesh head coach Peter Butler introduced two significant changes to his starting line-up for the final encounter, aiming to alter the tactical approach that brought them through the semi-finals. Forward Sabina Akter Prity and midfielder Umehla Marma, who both featured in the semi-final victory over Nepal, were left out of the opening eleven. In their places, Butler recalled the experienced duo of Shamsunnahar Junior and Tohura Khatun to reinforce the squad’s attacking threat.

The tactical adjustments nearly paid dividends early in the match, with Bangladesh creating their first major scoring opportunity in the 12th minute. Winger Ritu Porna Chakma delivered a precise cross into the penalty area, but Tohura Khatun failed to make contact with the ball. Just two minutes later, Tohura found herself in open space after breaking into the 18-yard box, but her subsequent shot missed the target. The forward remained a persistent threat throughout the opening period, coming close again in the 41st minute when her strike narrowly missed the far post.

Breakthrough, Equaliser, and Second-Half Goals

The deadlock was broken in the 42nd minute when India seized the advantage through Pyari Xaxa. Wearing the number 10 jersey, the forward navigated past a Bangladeshi defender to penetrate the penalty area, unleashing a powerful right-footed shot. The ball took a deflection off a Bangladeshi player, looping over the goalkeeper, Mile Akter, who was caught off her line, and settled into the back of the net to give the hosts a 1–0 lead.

Bangladesh responded immediately, finding an equaliser just before the referee blew for the half-time whistle. In the first minute of first-half stoppage time (45+1′), Ritu Porna Chakma found the back of the net, ensuring Peter Butler’s squad entered the interval on level terms at 1–1.

However, India regained their tactical dominance immediately after the restart, retaking the lead in the 46th minute when Sanfida Nongrum struck to make it 2–1. Bangladesh attempted to push forward to find another equaliser but left vulnerabilities in their defensive line.

The definitive blow arrived in the 82nd minute following a defensive lapse from Bangladesh. Defender Afeida Khandaker failed to intercept a ball from India’s Malavika P., who managed to push it toward the edge of the penalty box. The ball fell perfectly to Lynda Kom Serto, who calmly converted the opportunity into the back of the net. The goal extended India’s lead to 3–1, effectively sealing the match and ensuring the host nation lifted the championship trophy on home soil.
