A Bangladeshi border checkpoint in Panchagarh has seen the detention of an Indian national after authorities recovered a substantial amount of foreign currency during a routine inspection carried out on the basis of intelligence inputs.
According to officials, members of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) detained a man identified as Palash Chandra Majhi while he was returning to India from Bangladesh via the Banglabandha Zero Point area on Monday (27 April) at midday. The Banglabandha land port is a key transit point in Tetulia upazila of Panchagarh district, facilitating cross-border movement between Bangladesh and India.
Acting on intelligence information, BGB personnel conducted a search at the checkpoint after the individual completed immigration procedures. During the inspection, authorities discovered US dollars amounting to 24,600 in his possession. Following the recovery of the foreign currency, he was taken into custody on suspicion of unauthorised transport of cash across the border.
Preliminary information indicates that the detainee is a resident of Khanakul in the Hooghly district of India. It has also been reported that he had entered Bangladesh approximately one month earlier prior to the incident.
Officials from immigration and border security confirmed the sequence of events, stating that the individual had already completed immigration formalities before being stopped for a secondary inspection based on intelligence alerts. The detention took place shortly after he was cleared for departure.
Authorities have stated that both BGB and customs officials are in the process of initiating legal proceedings in accordance with applicable regulations concerning the unauthorised movement of foreign currency across the border.
