An allegation of fatal medical negligence has been raised against the nursing staff of a private hospital in Bogra, following the death of a two-and-a-half-month-old infant named Ayan. The incident occurred at approximately 8:30 am on Sunday (31 May) at the Srishti General Hospital, located in the Kanchgari area of the town. The deceased infant was the son of Abdul Ahad, an expatriate worker currently residing in Singapore, from the Purba Velurpara area under Sonatala Upazila.
According to family members, the infant was admitted to Srishti General Hospital on the day after Eid-ul-Fitr after contracting diarrhoea. Over the subsequent days of medical treatment, his clinical condition had been steadily improving. Relatives noted that until Saturday night, Ayan appeared to be recovering well, interacting and smiling normally.
The crisis escalated on Saturday night when the attending physician prescribed emergency intravenous fluids (saline) and injections. The infant’s maternal aunt, Putul, stated that the family repeatedly requested the rostered nursing staff to administer the prescribed medication. However, the nurses reportedly dismissed the urgency of the situation, instructing the family to wait until the morning. The prescribed treatments were subsequently left unadministered, and the infant’s condition deteriorated overnight, leading to his death before dawn.
When questioned regarding the incident, Anwar Hossain, the Assistant Manager of Srishti General Hospital, confirmed that the child had been admitted with diarrhoea but failed to provide a definitive response regarding the specific allegations of medical malpractice or professional negligence.
Local law enforcement and health administration officials have confirmed that official investigations will commence upon the receipt of a formal written complaint from the family.
| Authority / Representative | Designation | Official Statement / Action Taken |
| Ibrahim Ali | Officer-in-Charge (OC), Bogra Sadar Police Station | Stated that preliminary findings indicate nursing negligence as the probable cause of death. Legal action will be initiated upon receiving a formal complaint. |
| Khurshid Alam | Civil Surgeon, Bogra | Confirmed that the matter is currently being monitored and reviewed. Assured that necessary administrative actions will be taken via an investigation once a written complaint is filed. |
| Anwar Hossain | Assistant Manager, Srishti General Hospital | Acknowledged the patient’s admission for diarrhoea but offered no specific explanation regarding the allegations of negligence. |
The bereaved family has expressed profound grief and holds the hospital management accountable for institutional negligence. The mother of the deceased was witnessed holding the infant, declaring that her recovering child had been killed by the lack of care.
The family has announced that a formal lawsuit will be filed once the infant’s father returns to Bangladesh from Singapore. Consequently, the final funeral rites and burial procedures for the child have been delayed pending his arrival.
