Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has claimed responsibility for downing a United States MQ-9 Reaper drone over southern Iran. Concurrently, the elite military force announced that it had launched a retaliatory drone strike targeting the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet based in Bahrain. According to official confirmation from the IRGC, the American unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was intercepted and shot down early on Wednesday, 10 June, within the airspace of Iran’s southern Bushehr province.
In a formal statement, the IRGC explicitly linked these operations to recent American military activity in the region. The group stated that the actions were a direct response to recent US airstrikes targeting southern Iranian territories, specifically Jask, Sirik, and Qeshm Island.
According to the IRGC, prior US strikes in the Bamani district of Sirik city had caused structural damage to a telecommunications tower and completely destroyed two water reservoirs. The retaliatory drone operation against the US Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain was initiated by the IRGC Navy at 02:30 local time to penalise this infrastructure damage.
The IRGC statement added that an active, high-intensity conflict between the two forces is ongoing. It issued a stern warning that any continued military actions by the United States would be met with an even “more severe response” in the near future.
This escalation occurred only hours after United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced the completion of what it described as “defensive” precision strikes against Iranian military assets.
According to the US military command, American fighter jets had targeted and neutralized several Iranian air defence systems and radar installations located near the strategic Strait of Hormuz. CENTCOM asserted that its aerial operation was executed in direct response to an earlier incident in which an internally operated US Army Apache helicopter was reportedly shot down by Iranian forces. The US administration maintained that its strikes were proportionate measures designed to ensure the safety of its personnel operating in international and regional theatres.
The table below outlines the specific targets, locations, and stated military justifications provided by both parties regarding the engagements on 10 June.
| Operating Force | Combat Action & Hardware Involved | Location of Engagement | Stated Operational Motivation |
