Israeli Aggression in Gaza: 500 Violations of Ceasefire in Six Weeks

Since the implementation of a ceasefire in Gaza, Israel has reportedly violated the agreement at least 497 times over the past 44 days. During this period, Israeli military operations have resulted in the deaths of at least 342 civilians, the majority of whom were women, children, and the elderly, according to a statement issued last Saturday by Gaza’s media office.

The statement condemned Israel’s actions as “serious and deliberate violations” of the ceasefire, calling them clear breaches of international human rights law and the terms of the peace agreement. In a particularly violent day, 27 separate incidents were recorded, leaving 24 people dead and 87 injured. Gaza authorities emphasised that Israel bears responsibility for all resulting humanitarian and security crises, as the blockade continues to restrict essential supplies and medical aid despite the ceasefire agreement.

In response, the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed that recent operations were conducted in response to attacks on Israeli forces within Gaza’s so-called “yellow line.” The military said five senior Hamas fighters were killed during these operations. Hamas, however, called on Israel to disclose the identities of the fighters and described the military actions as part of a broader pattern of ceasefire violations.

Senior Hamas political bureau member Izzat al-Rishaq accused Israel of using pretexts to bypass the agreement and escalate destructive conflict. He denied claims that Hamas had abandoned the ceasefire. Amid escalating mutual accusations, a Hamas delegation arrived in Cairo on Sunday to meet with ceasefire mediators. A senior Hamas official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the talks would focus on Israel’s continued breaches.

The ceasefire came into effect on 10 October, mediated by the United States, with Qatar and Egypt also playing a crucial role. Observers warn that unless violations are halted, the humanitarian situation in Gaza will continue to deteriorate rapidly.
