A Lahore sessions court has delivered its final verdict in a high-profile defamation dispute between Pakistani singer and actor Ali Zafar and fellow musician Meesha Shafi, bringing a legal battle that has lasted nearly eight years to a decisive close.
On Tuesday (31 March), Additional Sessions Judge Asif Hayat ordered Meesha Shafi to pay 5 million Pakistani rupees in damages to Ali Zafar. The court held that the allegations made against him had caused reputational harm, and further directed Shafi to refrain from publishing or sharing any statements on social media accusing Zafar of sexual harassment in future.
The case stems from April 2018, when Meesha Shafi publicly accused Ali Zafar on social media platform Twitter (now known as X) of multiple incidents of sexual harassment. Zafar consistently denied the allegations, maintaining that they were false and damaging to his reputation. In response, he filed a defamation suit under Pakistan’s Defamation Ordinance 2002, initially seeking damages amounting to 1 billion rupees.
Over the course of the proceedings, the case became one of the most closely followed legal battles in Pakistan’s entertainment industry. It spanned approximately eight years, during which the trial court conducted 284 hearings and saw the replacement of nine different judges. A total of 20 witnesses provided testimony before the court reached its conclusion.
The Lahore High Court had previously instructed the trial court in January to conclude the matter within 30 days, accelerating long-delayed proceedings and paving the way for the final judgement.

Following the verdict, reactions emerged from both sides. Ali Zafar’s legal counsel, Umar Tariq Gill, stated that the implications of the judgement would become clearer once the full written order is made public. Meanwhile, Meesha Shafi’s lawyer, Saqib Jilani, confirmed that the defence team was reviewing the certified copy of the ruling and intends to challenge the decision in a higher court.
The sessions court’s ruling also upheld earlier interim directions issued by the Lahore High Court, which had restricted Meesha Shafi from making further public statements against Ali Zafar on any platform during the course of proceedings.
The case has drawn widespread public attention in Pakistan, reflecting broader debates around defamation law, freedom of expression, and the handling of workplace harassment allegations within the entertainment industry.
