Jamaat Secretary General Rebuts BNP Leader’s Remarks on Political Elimination

The Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Mia Golam Porwar, has issued a formal rebuttal to recent comments made by the Secretary General of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Minister for Local Government, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. In a strongly worded statement released on Saturday, 25 April 2026, Mr Porwar asserted that his organisation cannot be suppressed through intimidation or threats of eradication, characterising the BNP leader’s rhetoric as undemocratic and inflammatory.

The confrontation follows a public address by Mr Alamgir in which he reportedly stated that Jamaat-e-Islami must be “completely eliminated politically.” This exchange highlights a significant fracture in the contemporary political landscape of Bangladesh, particularly as the nation navigates a complex transition following the mass uprising of 2024.

Allegations of Fascist Rhetoric and Undemocratic Conduct

In his official communiqué, Mr Porwar described Mirza Fakhrul’s remarks as “unconstitutional, unwanted, and indecent.” He argued that the language of “political elimination” does not belong in a democratic discourse and drew direct parallels between the BNP leader’s phrasing and that used by the previous administration.

“The Secretary General of the BNP has spoken in the language of the fallen Awami fascists, which is not appropriate and is extremely regrettable,” Mr Porwar stated. “The nation does not expect such remarks, which lack political etiquette, from a leader of his responsibility. This statement signals an attempt to push the country towards violence and provocative anarchy, as seen in the past.”

The Jamaat leader further contended that at a moment when the citizenry is striving to establish democracy, the rule of law, and a society based on justice following a “bloody revolution,” the call to eliminate a parliamentary opposition force suggests a conspiracy. According to Mr Porwar, such rhetoric indicates a desire to re-establish authoritarianism by removing political rivals rather than engaging in healthy competition.

Philosophical Defeat and Political Bankruptcy

Mia Golam Porwar suggested that the resort to threats of elimination is a symptom of ideological failure. He argued that when a political entity or individual is unable to confront an opponent through logic, morality, and sound policy, they inevitably turn to provocative statements that hint at violence.

“The conscious people of this country believe that only when a party fails to face its political opponent with ideals and arguments do they introduce such bankruptcy through inflammatory rhetoric,” the statement read. Mr Porwar emphasised that Jamaat-e-Islami remains a resilient force despite nearly two decades of state-sponsored pressure. He reminded the BNP leadership that the previous regime spent seventeen and a half years attempting to dismantle Jamaat through “undemocratic and terrorist rampages” but ultimately failed to achieve its objective.

Warnings of Public Rejection and Calls for Restraint

The Secretary General concluded his statement by advising the BNP Secretary General to refrain from “short-sighted” remarks that jeopardise the prevailing democratic environment. He warned that those who attempt to conspire against the existence of Jamaat-e-Islami would ultimately face rejection by the electorate, much like the predecessors they are now accused of emulating.

  • Historical Resilience: Mr Porwar noted that despite the execution of its top leadership and the closure of its offices under the previous regime, the party has maintained its organisational structure.

  • Call to Action: He urged Mirza Fakhrul to adopt the language of systematic and constitutional politics rather than pushing the democratic system toward destruction.

  • National Stability: The statement stressed that provocative language serves only to destabilise the fragile peace achieved following the 2024 transition.

As of Saturday evening, the BNP has not issued a formal response to Mr Porwar’s statement. However, the exchange has prompted concern among political analysts regarding the unity of the forces that collectively opposed the previous autocratic rule. The tension underscores the growing competition for political space as the country prepares for future electoral processes.
