Japan’s Emperor Calls for Peace on WWII’s 80th Anniversary

TOKYO, Feb 23, 2025 (BSS/AFP) – Japan’s Emperor Naruhito reaffirmed his hopes for global peace as the country marks 80 years since the end of World War II, the Imperial Household Agency announced on Sunday.

Speaking ahead of his 65th birthday, Naruhito reflected on the significance of this milestone, urging people to cherish peace and renew their commitment to maintaining it.

“I hope that this year, the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, serves as a moment to reflect on the value of peace and strengthen our resolve to uphold it,” he said.

The emperor emphasized the importance of passing down the history of war to future generations, ensuring that its lessons are never forgotten.

“Many lives were lost in the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the air raids on Tokyo and other cities, as well as in battles in Okinawa, Iwo Jima, and overseas. We must deepen our understanding of the past and never forget those who perished or suffered.”

Naruhito also highlighted current global challenges, including wars, natural disasters, and climate change, calling for stronger international cooperation.

“Building a world that respects diverse values and fosters tolerance requires greater unity and collaboration within the international community,” he said.

Japan will officially commemorate the 80th anniversary of its World War II surrender on August 15, 2025.

During the war, Japan engaged in fierce battles in China, Burma (now Myanmar), and attempted to invade British-ruled India, which then included present-day Bangladesh. The conflict ended in August 1945 after the United States dropped nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
