A promising young life was cut tragically short when a 28-year-old jobseeker was struck and killed by a train in the capital’s Kuril Bishwa Road area. The fatal accident occurred at approximately 6:30 am on Sunday, 12 July 2026, as the young man was attempting to cross the railway tracks. Identified as Mohammad Rakib, the deceased was the son of Mohammad Mofizul Islam, hailing from Char Khalifa village in the Daulatkhan sub-district of Bhola.
According to eyewitnesses and law enforcement officials, Rakib had left his residence early in the morning to attend a long-awaited job interview. As he was walking alongside the railway tracks near the Kuril rail gate, he was violently struck by an oncoming train, sustaining catastrophic injuries. Passers-by rushed to the scene and discovered Rakib lying in a pool of blood. He was initially taken to Kurmitola General Hospital in a critical state. As his physical condition deteriorated rapidly, emergency medical teams transferred him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for specialised treatment.
Rakib arrived at the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital at 8:10 am. Despite the best efforts of the medical staff, attending doctors pronounced him dead at 8:15 am, just five minutes after his arrival.
Abu Raihan, a pedestrian who assisted in rescuing Rakib and transporting him to the hospital, provided a harrowing account of the incident. Drizzle was falling across the capital at the time, prompting Rakib to hold an open umbrella over his head whilst crossing the tracks. The umbrella, combined with the ambient sound of the rain, likely muffled the sound of the approaching train and its horn, preventing him from noticing the imminent danger.
Grief-stricken by the sudden loss, Rakib’s father revealed that his son had only recently completed his undergraduate studies. Filled with aspirations of building a secure future and supporting his family, Rakib had migrated from his rural village to Dhaka specifically to secure employment. The interview scheduled for Sunday morning was supposed to be the first major step towards achieving his professional goals.
Inspector Md Faruk, the officer-in-charge of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital police camp, officially confirmed the death. He stated that the body has been placed in the hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination. The railway police and relevant municipal authorities have been formally notified to initiate a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
