The incident occurred on Friday afternoon, 28 August, at the local banana market adjacent to the Jamalpur Gudaraghat area. The deceased, Abdul Majid Moral, was a resident of Jamalpur Madhyapara and the son of the late Altu Moral.

The accused, Mozammel Hossain—locally known as Muja Sarkar—resides in North Jamalpur Sarkarpara. Local residents and family members stated that Mozammel is involved with Jubo Dal politics and is widely known in the area for drug dealing and substance abuse.

Tensions between the family had been escalating for a considerable period. According to Billal Hossain Moral, the son of the deceased, his sister Shahanaj Begum faced persistent domestic violence at the hands of her husband. Mozammel regularly assaulted Shahanaj while under the influence of narcotics, forcing her to seek refuge at her father’s home on several occasions.

Shahanaj had been staying with her parents recently to escape the abuse. However, Mozammel continued to visit his father-in-law’s residence to harass her. When Abdul Majid Moral confronted Mozammel and protested against the mistreatment of his daughter, severe friction developed between the two men.

The situation escalated fatally on Friday afternoon while Abdul Majid was tending to his shop at the Jamalpur market. Mozammel arrived at the stall carrying an axe concealed inside a trolley bag. Before the elderly merchant could react, the attacker drew the weapon and struck him repeatedly across the head and body.

Abdul Majid collapsed to the ground, heavily bleeding, as the assailant fled the scene amidst the chaos. Local shopkeepers and passers-by rushed the unconscious victim to the Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex, where the attending medical officer declared him dead on arrival.

Police arrived shortly after to recover the body for a post-mortem examination. Law enforcement officials confirmed that an investigation is under way and efforts are being made to apprehend the suspect, who remains at large.
