Australia batter Sam Konstas has looked back on the much-discussed confrontation with Virat Kohli during his Test debut at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, describing the incident as something that both players have since left behind.
Konstas made his international debut for Australia in the Boxing Day Test against India at Melbourne, where he immediately found himself at the centre of attention. His aggressive batting against India’s formidable attack was followed by a tense exchange with Kohli, while another fiery moment later developed between the young opener and India fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah.
The confrontation with Kohli came during the opening day of the Test, when the two players became involved in a physical and verbal exchange on the field. The incident attracted considerable attention, particularly because Konstas was playing his first Test and Kohli was one of the most experienced players in the Indian side.
Speaking to The Times of India, Konstas said Kohli had effectively bumped him with his shoulder during the incident. Despite the confrontation, however, the Australian insisted there was no lasting animosity between them.
According to Konstas, the two simply moved on from what happened.
He also revealed that Kohli spoke to him after the match and wished him well for the future, giving the young Australian a very different impression from the intensity of their earlier exchange.
The incident resulted in Konstas being fined 20 per cent of his match fee. At the time, his on-field conduct attracted widespread attention, particularly given the high-profile nature of the Test and the intensity of the rivalry between India and Australia.
Yet the confrontation was only one part of an extraordinary debut for Konstas.
The teenager produced an attacking display against an Indian bowling attack featuring Bumrah, widely regarded as one of the leading fast bowlers in world cricket. Konstas showed little hesitation in taking the attack to him and produced one of the most memorable shots of his early international career when he struck Bumrah for a six with an audacious reverse-scoop-style shot.
The boundary was particularly significant because Bumrah had been exceptionally difficult to hit for sixes in Test cricket. Konstas’s fearless approach therefore became one of the major talking points of the match.
The young batter also appeared to engage in some verbal exchanges with Bumrah after playing the shot. Looking back on the episode, however, Konstas said he does not remember every detail clearly.
Instead, he now views the entire sequence with a degree of amusement.
For a player making his Test debut, sharing the field with established stars such as Kohli and Bumrah was already a major occasion. To then become involved in confrontations with both, while also taking the attack to India’s premier fast bowler, made the Melbourne Test an unusually eventful introduction to international cricket.
Konstas acknowledged the significance of facing Bumrah at such an early stage of his career. He suggested that conceding runs to a young debutant would naturally have been frustrating for a bowler of Bumrah’s standing, particularly in a fiercely contested Test between Australia and India.
What stands out from Konstas’s latest comments, though, is the absence of lingering bitterness. The confrontation with Kohli may have generated headlines at the time, but the Australian now considers it part of the competitive nature of elite cricket.
For Konstas, the Melbourne Test ultimately became much more than a debut. It was a first encounter with the pressure of Test cricket, a chance to challenge one of the world’s leading bowlers and an introduction to the intensity that surrounds an Australia-India contest.
The clash with Kohli remains one of the most memorable moments from that opening chapter of his international career. But, as Konstas’s latest comments suggest, what happened on the field has stayed on the field.
