A long-running family dispute over land ended in tragedy in Bangladesh’s Madaripur district after a man reportedly died following a punch delivered by his cousin during an argument.
The incident took place on Wednesday night in Sarhe Egaroshi village under Madborchar Union of Shibchar Upazila. The deceased was identified as Altaf Madbor, 45, son of Islam Madbor. The accused, Barek Madbor, son of Moslem Madbor, is a resident of the same village and was reportedly Altaf’s first cousin.
According to police, local residents and family members, tensions had been simmering between the two men for a considerable period over land ownership and several related family matters. Such disputes are not uncommon in rural communities, where disagreements over inherited property and boundary demarcation often become a source of prolonged conflict among relatives.
Witness accounts suggest that the disagreement escalated on Wednesday evening when the cousins became involved in a heated verbal altercation. As the argument intensified, Barek Madbor allegedly struck Altaf Madbor forcefully in the chest. Moments later, Altaf collapsed to the ground.
Locals rushed to the scene, but he was reportedly pronounced dead at the spot before any medical assistance could be provided. The sudden nature of the death shocked family members and residents of the village, many of whom were aware of the longstanding tensions between the two sides.
Following the incident, the accused fled the area and remains at large. Law enforcement authorities have launched efforts to locate and apprehend him.
Shibchar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Kamal Hossain said police recovered the body after receiving information about the incident. The body was subsequently sent to the Madaripur morgue for a post-mortem examination to determine the precise cause of death.
Police officials stated that legal proceedings are underway and that further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation and autopsy report. Authorities are continuing to gather evidence and record statements from witnesses as part of the inquiry.
The incident has once again highlighted how unresolved family and property disputes can escalate into serious violence, sometimes with fatal consequences, underscoring the importance of peaceful conflict resolution and timely legal intervention.
