Land Dispute Turns Fatal as Elderly Mother Falls After Push

An 82-year-old woman died after allegedly being pushed by her son during an argument over family land in Haluaghat, Mymensingh. Police have detained her son and daughter-in-law for questioning in connection with the incident.

The incident took place on Monday afternoon in Bariakanda village of Haluaghat upazila. The deceased, Rezia Khatun, was the wife of the late Kazimuddin and lived in the same village.

According to local residents, a dispute over family property led to an argument between Rezia and her son Dulal Mia, along with other members of the family. The disagreement reportedly escalated into a confrontation. At one stage, Rezia fell to the ground amid the pushing and shoving.

She subsequently became unwell and died at the scene, according to people familiar with the incident. The circumstances surrounding her fall and death have not yet been conclusively established.

After receiving information about the incident, police from Haluaghat Police Station went to the village and recovered Rezia’s body. Her son Dulal Mia and his wife, Hosne Ara, were detained for questioning as part of the initial investigation.

A neighbour, Saidul Islam, said disputes between Rezia, her son and daughter-in-law had reportedly occurred on several occasions. He said the latest disagreement began over a piece of land beside the family home before turning into a physical confrontation.

The police are now examining the events that preceded the elderly woman’s death, including whether she sustained any injuries when she fell and whether the alleged push directly contributed to her death. Establishing the precise sequence of events will be important in determining whether the incident was accidental or involved criminal responsibility.

Haluaghat Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Ferdous Alam said the exact cause of Rezia Khatun’s death, as well as the identities and roles of those responsible, would be established after an investigation.

Police sent the body to a morgue for examination. The post-mortem findings are expected to assist investigators in determining the medical cause of death and in assessing the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The two detainees are being questioned as the investigation continues. Police have not yet disclosed whether any formal case has been filed or whether further arrests will be made.

Land and inheritance disputes can become particularly sensitive within families, but investigators will rely on witness statements, medical evidence and other available information rather than drawing conclusions from the initial allegations. The circumstances of Rezia Khatun’s death will therefore remain subject to the outcome of the police investigation and post-mortem examination.
