Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) officers have seized two foreign-made pistols, 10 rounds of live ammunition, and a consignment of crystal methamphetamine valued at approximately 50 million BDT (£300,000) during a targeted operation in the hill tract district of Khagrachhari.
The raid was carried out late on Tuesday night by troops from the Yamini Para Battalion (23 BGB) in Matiranga Upazila.
Acting on precise intelligence regarding an incoming contraband shipment along the porous border, a specialist patrol led by the battalion commander established a mobile checkpoint at the Gaurangapara three-way intersection. At around 2:40 am, officers flagged down a motorcycle carrying two individuals arriving from the direction of Panchhari.
Although the rider initially slowed down, the suspects abruptly executed a U-turn and sped off towards Laindong to evade search procedures. BGB personnel immediately gave chase in their patrol vehicle, pursuing the fleeing motorcycle for nearly three kilometres before the suspects veered off the main road onto the narrow, unpaved Birashitila track.
Adverse environmental conditions—heavy rainfall, deep mud, pitch darkness, and a restricted track width—forced the BGB vehicle to lose ground. Taking advantage of the reduced visibility and terrain, the suspects abandoned their motorcycle beneath a roadside culvert and fled into the adjacent dense jungle on foot.
Upon inspecting the abandoned vehicle, BGB personnel discovered two foreign pistols complete with magazines, 10 rounds of live ammunition, and a large stash of high-purity crystal methamphetamine hidden inside a compartment beneath the seat.
Lieutenant Colonel Md. Khalid Ibne Hossain, Commanding Officer of the Yamini Para BGB Zone, confirmed the recovery, noting that this marks the first time crystal meth has been seized within their operational jurisdiction. He re-affirmed that anti-smuggling drives and border surveillance operations will continue unabated to prevent the illegal entry of drugs and arms into the country.
