The fatal incident occurred at dawn on Tuesday near the Paikaramoor area within Rajbari district. Nazrul hailed from Bakal village in Agailjhara upazila of Barishal district, where he was the son of Abdul Malek Miah. Earning his living behind the wheel, he had set out on a routine transit assignment.
According to local witnesses and highway police reports, Nazrul and his assistant were transporting a heavy consignment of cotton tree timber. Their journey began in Gournodi, Barishal, with the final destination set for Kushtia. As the vehicle neared the Paikaramoor locality in the early hours, mechanical trouble struck when one of the lorry’s tyres suddenly burst.
Compelled to halt on the edge of the highway, Nazrul parked the vehicle and immediately set to work alongside his assistant to mend the tyre. While he was occupied with the repairs, tragedy unfolded. Another lorry, traveling along the same route, approached from behind and slammed violently into the stationary vehicle. The sheer impact forced Nazrul underneath the front axle of his own lorry, crushing him severely and causing instantaneous death.
Local bystanders, alerted by the crash, rushed to the scene alongside dispatched units from the police and the fire service. Emergency responders swiftly retrieved the victim and transferred him to the Kalukhali Upazila Health Complex. Upon examination, the on-duty medical officers pronounced him dead.
The driver of the offending lorry managed to flee the scene immediately following the impact, leaving the vehicle unidentified in the immediate aftermath.
Officer-in-Charge Md Shafiqul Islam of Pangsha Highway Police Station confirmed that efforts are actively underway to trace and apprehend the fleeing vehicle and its driver. Legal procedures regarding the tragic event are proceeding as required.
This incident highlights the severe hazards associated with unexpected vehicle breakdowns on regional transport corridors, particularly during the low-visibility hours of dawn and night. Transport safety advocates consistently emphasize that when heavy vehicles must stop due to mechanical failures, drivers need to deploy adequate warning signals and secure safe distances to protect themselves from oncoming traffic. Meanwhile, the sudden loss of Nazrul Islam has plunged his family and relatives into profound grief.
